If there is a timng mark on the hub, what should it line up with to be at 30 degrees before top dead center of the # one cylinder on the compression stroke? Is there a corresponding mark on the engine case?
As Jason said you use the parting line of the crankcse halves. Once the mag is installed to #1 on the comp stroke I check the timing with the marks on top to line up with the parting on top. You are the on comp of #3 however the spacing is 180 deg between firing. What is the difference. Do not try this on a radial engine as some have compansated cams in the distributor to allow for the slight stroke varations between cylinders.
