  • Question Jury struts

Ok, I looked at the jury struts today and one side is not straight.
How do you set then on the struts???
If I put it straight up and down it pushes the struts down. Is this OK??

    Re: Question Jury struts

    Robbie,

The fittings that the jury struts bolt to (on the bottom of the wing) are threaded. If you take out the jury strut to wing fitting bolts and move the jury strut out of the way, you should be able to screw them in a couple turns. This will raise the attach point for the jury strut, and allow it to be vertical without putting a side load on the strut. You should look at these little fittings anyway every once in a while. The threaded piece is not solid stock; it is a threaded tube, for some reason. I had one that had rusted and broke in the groove in the threads while in flight. It wasn't a huge deal, just landed and replaced it. The jury strut is really just there to stiffen the lift and drag struts, and I don't think its precise orientation is critical. The main concern, I would think, is if there is too much bend on main or lift struts due to improper jury strut fitting adjustment, it could maybe affect the washout on the wing??? Good luck.

This is because if the threaded rod were solid, it would be difficult to weld to the thin bracket.

I know of several of these that shear through the thread roots (including one on my project), because there is not much material there.

        Re: Question Jury struts

During a preflight I found one of my jury strut attach fittings cracked thru in the threaded area. When I pulled the the threaded portion from the wing I was amazed at how thin the material was. Since the crack was near the attach end I was able to have it welded. I haven't had a problem with them since, but I always look closely at them on every preflight.

For info: here's the bracket...and a view of how they typically break.

I made a new threaded hollow rod (slightly thicker wall) and welded it in to the machined-out folded piece.
