Hardware Bill of Materials (BOM)?

Assuming those who have gone thru a rebuild* and replaced all the A/N hardware, did you happen to save that shopping list? That may be a valuable tool since more and more of our fleet is facing that task. - Mike

* "rebuild"= stripping down to the metal and rebuilding, not necessarily with original components, as opposed to 'restore' which I take to mean 'put back in the condition it came off the line'.

OK, I'll jump in with this: Spruce sells hardware kits that are a good starting point. They tend to have too much of what you don't need (e.g. AN6 bolts, etc.) but I have been operating out of a kit I got some time ago. As you are going through your rebuild or restore, think about starting your own BOM.

As you take it out, measure and write it down, then order new when you've got it all apart.... usually I just head over to the bolt bins and make sure I have what is needed in stock and write down any oddball stuff.

"Bolt bins" meant to me large containers w/ heaps of bolts of all sizes. There was a time when hardware was sold by the bagfull, not individually as now. So he has a huge supply like having his own A/C Spruce. I have little drawers with one(1) each from my kit and always have to use washers--always one too many, but don't tell. Are you doing any flying in your friends plane?

I always try to keep a pretty big selection of hardware on hand... screws are in the hundreds, bolts are in the 10s or 20s... up through AN5. When you're a few days from hardware, and a customer's plane is here and needs a bolt, you can't very well have to order it.. Hardware really isn't that awful expensive.

When I started my rebuild, I made just such a list by going line by line through the parts manual. I ordered all of this hardware at once, and it seems to have worked out pretty well because I have had few hardware orders since (hope you can read an Excel file).

Its funny that this now seems so long ago. When I bought my Model 19 rebuild project, I figured one year and I would be flying. I am now well into my third year, close to four. But I have a busy career, family, and house on a lake that needs lots of maintenance so I guess I shouldn't complain. The old rule of thumb sure applies . . . . take your initial estimated time and budget, and multiply each by at least two, but more likely three, and that is where you will end up!

Try this list, Mike. (rename it to .xls first).

Although not 100% accurate or complete, I did try to keep tabs on what I purchased. I did get left with loads of spares (and some unused parts), but at least I didn't get held up through lack of bits.

All of the above are good suggestions. When ever I was purchasing a bolt or two for my homebuilt, I bought extra. Usually, if I needed one, I bought three. Then if I needed two, I bought four; need five, bought seven.

As someone said, they really are cheap, assuming the standard sizes. I once bought two AN3-56 and they were like $7 a piece! Some sizes, in AN4 and AN3, I bought a couple of the size above and below in case I was ordering the wrong grip length, and when building from scratch, this works well.

When I was ready for the TC rebuild, I had everything in plastic drawers, labeled and ready.

One more thing, whenever I do buy a bag full at OSH or someplace that carries excess materials with questionable origin, I keep those separate as non-structural bolts. That way, even if they are counterfits, they will be adequate for what I'm doing.
