Wood Spar Splice

Ok, this is going to sound odd but this is actually the best source I can think of for this kind of question.

If you were going to have to splice a spar, say on a Mooney, how would you do it. I do not have the skill to do this (that I know of), but am curious as to how it is done.

If you are talking wood, Resorcinol two-part adhesive is really good stuff. I've run some tests on it and the wood will break before the bond will. (When the test splice is made per AC 43 but without the reinforcement plates.)

Both of the above are good advice, Richard. I might add that Resorcinol is the ONLY approved adhesive, unless you get a field approval. In my mind, I'd never splice with anything else.
There's also a couple "books" that I feel are imperative to have and know if you're going to try something like splicing a spar.. ANC-19, which is Wood Aircraft Inspection and Fabrication, that was issued by the Subcommittee on Air Force-Navy-Civil Aircraft Design Criteria. ANC-18, Design of Wood Aircraft STructures, that was issued by the same. They are both still obtainable through EAA (if I'm not wrong) and are very detailed and great info.

I have ANC18. You can get a copy from ESSCO Inc., they advertise in Trade-A-Plane. I Have never seen ANC 19 but now I am interested in it.

I would say that ANC18 is better suited for a design tasks than a repair tasks. Unless you have some engineering backround or interest in producing a design you will probably look at it once or twice and never again after that.

ANC 19 sounds very interesting, never heard of it before (or I forgot!). I think I'll see if ESSCO has it.

If anyone around here could do a good job splicing a spar, my father in law can. Lon Carr. He has a cabinet shop, building a Hatz, owns a '39 BC65. He is not an A&P. I am an A&P and I would trust his work more than any A&P I know. Give me a holler if you need some assistance.
