  • REmoving the elevators; how get to the bottom link?

The elevator is in two halves.
They are held together by a link which connnects to the control cable. There is this same arrangement on the other end of this 'Horn".

I had no problem removing the top link and seperating the elevator halves, but
how was one supposed to get to the lower horn and seperate the bottom half?

am I missing an access port? - Mike

    Yes you are.

There is an access point on the port side, either rectangular or round.

Get in there and undo the AN4 lower cable horn bolt. Then the two elevators will come apart, but best ask a friend to help...one on each elevator (the trim cable needs to be slipped off the pullet at this point).

Hmmm - may have gotten a bit too enthusiastic - undid the cable at the pilot end and pulled it all the way thru the guides and around the pulley - No foul; the fabric is coming off. - Mike

        Mike,
If you still have the lower elevator horn hooked up the the aft(rear)stablizer mount WILL NOT MOVE. You must remove the elevators completely before the rear part of the stablizer will come off.

Mike, I guess this means you found the airplane was not ferriable? I didn't see any new posts or threads detailing what your inspection found.

BTW, when I sold my Auster, we only had to remove one side of the stabilizer/elevator to get it in a U-haul box truck. if you are using a flatbed you don't have to take off the tail at all. A couple of big red flags tied to the tips of the stabilizer should do it for a flatbed. You can measure the tail span to meet highway regulations AFTER you get it home...

10 feet is a little over width not to mention if it were my bird I wouldn't want to take the risk of meeting someone who was not paying attention to the road....even if you can swerve to miss them road signs are hell on stablizers and the fuslage mounts they're bolt/rusted to. Bill is correct about just removing one side, that will keep you under width with room to spare but I would not try moving it with both installed.

Two problems. First, my hanger will be about an hour drive from me; if I did ferry it, that's where it would go. However, being an hour away, I could only work on it on Sundays.

Second, the A&P I'm working with, and who would have made that decision is taking his sweet time getting to 88M.

Third, based on what I've seen, I know the cover needs to come off and rust addressed.

She may have been airworthy, but I really didn't have a practical place to fly it to.

Putting all factors together, I elected to take it apart and trailer it to a closer-to-home storage facility, where I will take it bit-by-bit home to work on the parts. - Mike

Sounds like you've made a logical and good decision, Mike. I'm sure you'd have rather been flying, but you thought through and weighed the situations and came up with a plan...good job!

Mike, Have you started it, or does that depend on the mechanic too? You need his prop, right?

Haven't started it; the A&P apparently had other priorities. - Mike
