  • Wing Tie Down Ring

Is there a source for the cast aluminum wing tie down ring? I bought my '46 BC-12D 10 years ago without one on one side. I've never seen the right style in WagAero or ACSpruce.

The strut on that side of the airplane had been replaced before I bought it. The major chord of the front strut is larger than the major chord of the front strut on the other side of the airplane. So I suspect that the ring was misplaced while they tried to find a strap to hold it that would fit around the new strut.

I have a strap. But I hope to find a ring.

Don't know that this is much help now. But about a year ago I purchased a set on EBAY from someone in Australia. I'll look for my notes.
Never installed them. I use a canvas strap with a steel ring sewed in the end. Flip it over the strut and attach the tie down ropes to this ring. Carry the straps and spare screw anchors in the baggage compartment.
Even with the original tie-down rings you need to pass the rope over the struts.

      Tim,
I have an aluminium tie-down ring that you could have for the cost of shipping from England, email me off-list or PM me if you still need one. Do you need the steel strut clamp too?

I am sure that you are aware that these rings should not be used as the sole means of tying down the wings...the tie down rope should be passed through the rings on the way round the strut, so that the rings prevent the rope slipping down the strut.

        tie-down ring BL-65

Has anyone seen a tie-down ring for the BL-65? Mine has none and I'm not comfortable tying it down via the strut.

        Any suggestions would be appreciated.

        Regards

Have you tried contacting the factory at www.taylorcraft.com
They are currently selling parts, and might have some in stock.

            wing tie-down ring

            I called them first,

They said they didn't plan on making any, they are really busy getting certification for the new taylorcraft.

They suggested just tying it down via the struts as that is what they do around there.

            Thanks

              Tie Down ring

You know Tim, Mickey change that struct out for me about a year before you purchase it from me. I will ask him if he still has the ring. You never can tell.

I saw two Taylorcraft cast aluminum tie-down rings in the display case at Columbia Airmotive, in Troutdale, Oregon a few months ago. Columbia Airmotive: 503-665-4896. I hope they are still there. They seem to have a good supply of Taylorcraft parts in general.

                  Tie down rings`

One of our old members " Greg Guy" had some tie down rings that attached to the strut wing bolt. VERY well made and strong. He has not made a post to the new forum as of today but he is listed in the "Members" section. As i recall they were less than $40 for the pair more or less. The only way to tie down IMHO

Looks like they would be making them for the new planes. I HATE to see a plane tied down by the struts. Maybe it's OK, but just doesn't set well with me. If for no other reason, you'll eventually wind up wearing the paint off your struts with some of the ropes in these parts. Not to mention the airports that only have tiedown chains. Picturing a chain wrapped around a lift strut makes my skin crawl.

I've got strut fairings AND tie down rings. Don't know if it' some aftermarket job or was standard at the factory?

                            Cast tie downs

We have discussed this many times in the past probably on faq section. Do NOT trust the cast rings with chain, they will shatter. Wrap the rope or strap around the strut then hook to the chain. The cast rings were there only to keep the rope from sliding down the strut. I would really "cringe" after seeing my ship on its back after a high wind. IT happened to the ser# 001 F-19 one time. Hi Tim just ask you can have one from here real cheap..... should have asked when you were here...

Thanks for the heads-up Forrest. I've got a set of nylon tie down straps (from Sporty's) that I always keep in the plane. Straps are adjustable so they're easier than tying a knot and I don't have to worry about chains.
