  • wing strut attach bolts

First test flight since buying the plane. Hanger mate and volunteer test pilot noticed that the bolts attaching the wing strut to the wing are using a nylock nut. His champ manual says to use castle nuts and cotter pins. Are nylock acceptable in this location?

After flying the t-craft, the champ owner with a C90 says: "Wow thats a fast plane for only an A65"

On the principle that only rotating parts require a locking mechanism, I always use nylock nuts. Except for the strut lower bolt, which has a "rotating" footstep, so I use a cotter pin on that one.

Yes, the Champ is a slow pot-bellied pig in comparison, but then I am biased!

Robert, when I had my Champ, I actually referred to it as The Pot Bellied Pig!

It's pretty depressing having a flight of Stearmans go by like you're standing still. I think the only thing I ever passed in it was the MetLife Blimp.

        Andy,

I can only speak for my L2, but it has (and requires) castle nuts and cotter pins on the wing struts, upper and lower.

I replaced the struts yesterday and installed new hardware.

The self locking ( Boot) nuts were not available when the A was built and all Taylorcrafts after used the castle nut, cotter key system for about everything... refer to Standard Practices manual for usage of self locking nuts.

Thanks for all the replys, It seems that all other ships in the hanger have nylock in this location - except the two champs of course.

I can't wait to fly this thing...

Atta boy , stay away from those Champ guys
You know we do a GREAT Aeronca Fly-In here in Alliance in August if you can't make the Taylorcraft Fly-in come to it. Just watch out in the pattern you don't run over an Aeronca
see our web site www.taylorcraft.org check front page for events.

Let us know how the flying goes.
