    control wheels

Hopefully Hank is reading this, I know it seams like a dicotomy,
but even though I want (need) to replace my stock brakes with
something (anything) that works better, and I don't mind donating my large tach to a ship thats museum bound, and will build a birdseye maple flight deck, I REALLY would like the
Round control wheels on my girl. Do you have / make any Hank?
    How much? Sabrina

Wow Sabrina, I'm really lost here. Get back to me off group and I will see if I can find some help for round wheels and big tachs. I have a 41 and it didn't have either one. I have got some experiance with real wood instrument panels and DON'T recomend them. For one, they aren't original (which really isn't that big a deal) but more important they are heavy, hard to mount the instruments in, illegal (if the FAA guy even knows what he is looking at) without an STC and most important could be dangerous in a crash since wood splinters don't show on X-Ray. A Faux finish on metal panel is really not hard to do and you will probably be able to use a replacement metal panel much easier than trying to work birdseye maple (much as I love the look of real wood).
You lost me on the brakes comment. Why would you want better brakes? More than what is needed to hold for a mag check is just asking for a plane on its back.

        control wheels

        Hank,
In answer to your question as to why I would want to have more brakes, I don't want more brakes, I want predictable brakes. The reason I got the plane for the price that I did was
that it had SERIOUS problems with it's brakes. One wheel
locked up several times on the prevous owner, the local IA saw
it happen once, he is a retired maintainance forman with TWA,
and faild it on it's annual four years ago. Since the owner had
four other planes at the field at the same time, he just flew the others, and the plane sat in a hanger for four years.
The brakes I want to put on it are the ones off the F-19
T-craft. not reall any stronger, but a lot better design.
I like flying into back country strips, and cross winds don't
even faze me. But a brake locking up in a situation like that
        could be catastrophic. Sabrina

YEOW! The stock brakes on a Taylorcraft are NOT strong but mine have been relible. With a history like that I wouldn't touch them when moving (and would be careful on mag checks). The system is pretty simple. Have you taken all the pulleys out and checked the bushings and cables? If you pull the floor boards and LG leg to fuselage fairings you can get to all of them. The little bell crank at the bottom of the gear leg is held by a pivot pin with a cotter pin retainer and tends to rust and stick. Even the brakes themselves are not hard to take apart and clean up. One hint, just do one side at a time so you will remember how it all goes back together. I have amazed myself at how fast I can forget which way a small part goes back in and looking at the other side is a lot easier than asking a buddy to pull a floor board to see his.
Fly careful and DON'T hit em hard if you put bigger brakes on! I still have a friends cowl in the garage I tapped back straight after he did an inside loop at zero altitude on a runway.

            more on brakes

            Hank,
From what I understans, the brakes on the F-19 are the same
as those on the 7-AC Champ. A guy at the airport here says the the brakes on his Champ just manage to hold it on mag check.
I can do my mag check on the run, I don't care if the brakes can hold the plane at run-up, all I want them for is differential braking.

Are there any "red balls" out there? I need one front one that says "Taylorcraft. I have the other 1 and 1/2.

Go to the technical section on home page and scroll down to bottom of that page and the info for the plastic balls is there

Yes, and they are great. I bought enough to redo my yokes, see here: http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...=pretzel+yokes

I am assuming that you still have the brake lock up problem.

Jack your wheels up (one at a time) and spin the wheel with the brakes off.

I bet that you find the brakes are set to drag like on a car's drum brakes.

They should not drag, when / if they do the metal brake shoe gets hot and expands.

When it expands then it drags even more and gets hotter and the process continues until it locks.

Perhaps your's drag too much or there is something loose or misaligned in the brake assembly that allows the shoes to move slightly and then drag after they move and that starts the expansion process.

No, my brakes are fine Dave. I fixed them in a few days after I posted that comment back in 2004.
