  • A little advice please

    Hi all

Sorry in advance if this is a dumb question. I am looking at buying a 1946 BC12D and recently viewed one. The plane in question was "rebuilt" approximately 10 years ago but the wing spars have never been replaced and are original. On removing one of the inspection covers, a small crack was noticed on the left rear spar. Naturally I was a little concerned but was told it could be fixed quite easily.

My question is this.....is it advisable to buy a plane with the original 1940's spars still fitted and as one crack has been found already, is it likely that there are more cracks lurking out of sight?

I would be very grateful for any thoughts and advice you guys could give me.
    Thanks

Yes, there ARE other cracks lurking in there. If I'm wrong, prove it by having a look under all the fittings

Buy the airplane, and buy it at a price that allows you to replace the spars.

Fortunately you have an excellent resource in England in Mr. Rob Lees, who will more than likely be happy to look over your shoulder and keep you pointed in the right direction... after all he is the Ambassador of Taylorcraftness!

      Re: A little advice please

Thanks for your reply Bill. Things have moved on a bit. The vendor was told that if the spars were replaced we would buy the plane. Unfortunately, he wanted US to pay for the repairs on top of the purchase price!! This would have made the plane way overpriced. Had it been an A1 example, I could have been tempted, but it was pretty tatty already and was being bought knowing that a certain amount of work would be required. Shame really.

Thanks again Bill.....and if anyone knows of a Taylorcraft available in the UK.....
