Re: C85 Hiccup or Sleep depravation?

Ram air works with an open direct feed to the carb, ala racing ships, Mooney 201 ( ramair) is a good example, screen or filter blocks this effect quite a bit, the plate does not really degrade the system taht much.
That SB hits the nail on the head, then we go back to original training, clear her out more often in the pattern and descending. That addition of power when needed should Always be a two or three stage , slightly open , back; more open; back and then power all in as needed. It is a good habit, the mixture change on the Stromberg is correct. All other I see is good advise. YES check for intake leaks, spray a little starting fluid around the tubes ( gently) with help & a fire extinguisher handy if she speeds up you got one, check for staining around the elbow to cyl.
Kelli-Belle needs walked , I need to hook up the back blade on the tractor. The transfer of infor to the CD's works great! Bob will be updating the site with current events. Sun-n-Fun is close by. the factory is doing stuff, all's right in the World... bye

      Hi Ed!
      Ram air or blast tube?
@ 20 degrees F on a typical 45 mph glide, your blasting -2 degree air through the carb heat box (not to mention everything else under the cowl) just when you've stopped producing heat by pulling the power off. I think the baffle works simply by not super cooling the heat box and giving what meager heat the exhaust shroud is producing, a fighting chance.
      Counter productive?
We're talking about a pokey antique in dense Vermont- NY winter air, not an air hungry, 200+, NACA vented ram Reno racer in the hot thin desert atmosphere!
Fleets, Wacos, and Supercubs, to name a few, have front plate style air filters and seem to fly just fine, sans ram.
See you soon, we can go racing around Mount Mansfield!

Re: C85 Hiccup or Sleep depravation?

The lycomings have a system that inhearently warms the intake air. Continentals do not. Changes in throttle setting in the continental change the velocity of the air through the venturi along with less fuel. less velocity and less fuel means warmer carb temps etc. small amounts of ice melt and are consumed?

Also, the tremendious amount of lead in 100 LL is just plain bad for all 80 oct engines and cause hesitation when applying throttle. I try to use a 2:1 mix of auto fuel to av-gas to get a proper lead content for my PA 22-150 engine. I intend to do the same on my taylorcraft when I get her flying.
