Does anyone have details for the instrument faces on the 1939 instrument cluster? How about a source who overhauls these clusters? The one with this project is in fine shape, but the paint and numerals on the oil instruments have flaked off. Also, the large Tach is just a flat black with white numbers. I thought there was a Taylorcraft logo of something more art deco than flat black. The fishbowl compass is in great shape, looks like it was suspended, but I do not have a location. Was it hung between the "V" tubes, as in some Cubs? This one wasn't panel mounted, as far as we can tell. Thanks for your advice and comments. Bob Coolbaugh

Re: Pre-War Instrument Cluster Overhaul
I've messed with the clusters before. With the exception of the A models I don't think any of them had the Taylorcraft logo on them. Most of the dials I've seen have had the numbers for the oil temp. and pres. printed on the large face. The little inset face on the oil gauges some times is in bad shape. It is just painted white with black lines. It is easy enough to fix. I had a silk screen to do the Lycoming tachs, but I'm not sure where and what shape it is in. That was almost 15 years ago that I did them.
For your compass if it was mounted over head there will be a small plate welded over the tube cluster in the top of the wind shield. there will be 2 holes to mount the compass. Some of the early airplanes had the compass mounted on top of the instrument panel with a hump cover. Tom

Re: Pre-War Instrument Cluster Overhaul
check with John Wolf and company Wlloughby, Ohio phone #1 440 942 0083, near Cleveland, restores the large tach or you may check with Precision Dial Co. Kalamazoo Mich. 269 375 5601 for silk screen printing. I hope this helps on you project?

Re: Pre-War Instrument Cluster Overhaul
I am working on NC22246 sold in Feb 39. I sent all of my original instruments to Keystone Instruments in PA. They have a web site.
My type certificate A-699, indicates that a compass was a factory option!
Keep in touch. Mine is Franklin Powered with a 65 hp. Originally left the factory with a 50 hp, but was STCed in 1951 to 65.
I have been working this project since I got it in the middle of 05.
Lots of parts - so little time!Franklin Power

Re: Pre-War Instrument Cluster Overhaul
Hi....I am looking for a large tach. I understand that Luscombe and Aeronca also used the same large tach?
