  • Need Rear Wing Struts

I need a set of rear wing struts for my 1951 Model 19. I phoned Univair today and they make new rear struts for the BC-12D but advised me that these struts are not approved for the Model 19. I am quite convinced that they are the same strut, and if so, I would be able to put them on my airplane as it is in the owner maintenance category in Canada. However I want to make darn sure they are the same strut before I order a set. Can anyone confirm this? Forrest, do you know? Appreciate any help or advice anyone can lend.

Maybe try the factory? It seems they're trying pretty hard to help us all out, and they'd most likely be able to tell you application for sure... just a thought.

Different type certificate #696 vs #1A9 , they are the same part #. Check your Parts list. OR see what the factory says

Why not make your own struts buy the materials weld it up.Then you can make as strong as you want.I made my own for my project.

              Jason:

Can you give more details on making your own struts?

Where did you get the materials?, did you jig the parts before welding? Gas welded or TIG? Approximate cost?

That's a fine looking project, we'd all like to see more photos too!

                      Re: Need Rear Wing Struts

I have a friend that owns several manufacturing companies. He has told me that if there was a demand for a good number, he could manufacture almost anything needed for an antique airplane.

If there is enough interest and, someone has the specs, it may be worth investigating. I would need a sample of the different sizes of tubing involved. A foot or so of each size should be sufficient.

Each individual would probably have to do the welding themselves, unless someone knows how we can have complete assemblies made without PMA approval.

Naturally, the more interest there is, the lower the unit price. So, if anyone is interested in such a venture, let me know. But understand, this would take several months before anyone would have strut material in hand.
