  • T-Craft Tyres

Without wishing to sound naive can someone please give me some pointers as to the best tyres for my 6 inch rims.

I currently have McReary 6.00-6 and they are due a change as have worn out considerably on the edges and have already been swapped around to even up the wear.

What I would like is some larger tyres than I currently have but don't want to go over the top with tyres that might soak up valuable horsepower. (I know they will slow me down Rob but I can cope with that if it's onlyh a few knots!)

I saw a Supercub today with some McReary 8.00-6's but would prefer something that wide but with a bit more height to them. I don't want to have to upgrade the wheels/brakes if I can help it.

Is this possible? I would welcome suggestions.

    Regards

Jason Gerard put 26" Bushwheels on his plane Here...he didn't change his rims. I have 7.00 x 6 on mine....Here works very well.

8.00 x 6 is a good compromise as well. Just remember- anything other than 6.00 x 6 requires a field approval! Unfortunately that is the only one on the Type Certificate.

I have a Taylorcraft that came with 800x6 tires.
It also came approved by 337 dated 3-14-73.
If you think a copy would help, I'd be happy to send
you a copy either by Fax or by Mail.

        Just info,

Wow, an impressive response. Thanks chaps.

Dano"T" - The pics are great. What I'm looking for is something in between the two. Something that has a decent height/width without looking TOO tundra-like. I want to be able to safely land on crop stubbles/unprepared permanent grassland without without worrying.

I must say I get confused by the two different measurement methods for tyres these days. What i'd like is tyres about 20 inches high and 8 wide. Is there such a thing?

Any further advice where the rest came from very welcome. Thanks

My 800x6 measure 19" high and 8" wide.

Anybody have a set of 850x6? How high are they?

              Just more info,

Don, my 8.50 x 6 measures 21.5 inches in diameter. 8 1/2 inches wide. The right hand pix shows 8.50's mounted. The left pix shows 29 inch tires mounted on a Taylorcraft with a Cub cowling setup.

Eric raises a good point about legality...that would be solved with Don's or Dan's offer for help with a copy of a 337.

Jonathan is in the UK, and a copy of a US 337 Form is commonly used here to demonstrate "prior use" of a modification, and will generally be "rubber stamped" by our authorities here.

I just got a set of tubes and tires from wag aero for $149.00 6.00X6, they are fairly tall tires for the Taylorcraft. I like the way it sets.

                      Dick-

That beige Tcraft with the SC fwfwd, SC extended gear, and 29" tires sure has me drooling! Looks like it lost its tail number somewhere in photoshop land.

I am already thinking about finding an F21/22 to build a bushplane out of. Can't quite afford a PA18 yet.

                        Jason,
You've already got yours apart, make it into a bush plane. The 21 uses the same fuslage and wings with minor attach differences in the wings and struts.

                          All excellent advice, thanks.

I have contacted Don regarding the 337, very helpful.

                            Well....

I contacted the PFA back at beginning of January and included the 337 that was very kindly posted to me by a TFDF member. My letter requested approval for 8.00x6 tyres.

Today I received a polite reply. It has requested "evidence of an STC having been raised in the USA rather than just a form 337, which is not meant for the approval of design changes"

If anyone can help I would really be grateful. I must say it is all getting into jargon that will soon be passing over my head!!!

                              Eric,

it's limited to 2 or 4 ply in the TCDS.

So then 6 ply requires a feild approval too?
