  • Wiring Position lights

    Just picked up some position lights for my '46 BC12D / F-19 at Wentworth. Any suggestions or advice before I wire them up this weekend that would help expedite and simplify the process? The original wiring is still in the wings and I'm going to replace it. To do so I was going to attach the new wiring to the old and try to pull it through. Also I have 12 volt/ 60 amp system and am wondering what gauge wire, type of toggle and circut breaker is preferred? Thanks for the info.

    A good idea to replace the wires (mice love them). Pulling through should work in the wings...the wires just lie in grommets (in the stamped ribs, anyway). Use electrical tape (or similar) to make sure the tied ends don't snag.
    Don't know about the fuselage wire, however.

      stranded wire
      18 gauge
      10 amp fuse or breaker
      teflon or tefzel insulation
      crimped connections

      You could get by on 20 gauge wire and a 7.5 amp fuse/cb, but if memory serves me, the position lights draw 2 amps each, 6 amp total and the in-rush current will be higher than that which might cause annoying circuit breaker pops from time to time. 18 gauge is stronger which is useful in the high vibration environment.

      Use the best aviation switch you can find. Switches rated 120 volts AC are oly good for a fraction of that DC. The junk switches at auto stores are just that -- junk. Cockpit fires really suck.

          Argh. Brain fart!

          I should have said, "Switches rated xx amps AC are only good for a small fraction of that when used in DC applications."
