  • My engine quit after landing?!

Hi Guys: just wanted to get your thoughts on something. I flew my plane yesterday after about 5 weeks of inactivity. It started up and ran great as usual. I flew about 40 minutes from my home base and landed at Blairstown NJ. I noticed on final the engine seemed a little bit rough (carb heat was on as usual) after landing we rolled out and turned on to the taxiway. The engine was quite rough and then it stopped. My passenger got out and on the second pull it started up and ran perfectly. We did a few takeoffs and landings and then flew back home and landed with no problem. The engine has about 150smoh and always runs perfectly pulling 40 pounds of oil pressure with oil temp about 150. It seemed to me like a fuel problem, maybe a little dirt lodging in the carb somewhere then being dislodged? It was some kind of temporary gremlin.

One thing I have noticed is I get and always have gotten a really big rpm drop on runup with carb heat.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

Was there any water in the fuel? was it auto gas?

After rebuilding my A65 I now get only a small -25rpm at best drop with carb heat (1500 rpm). I have checked and re checked all adjustments and still only -25 rpm. I never touched the carb at MOH so it should be just as I removed it. I did however match port my intake/exhaust system. My static RPM is better than before OH. Never have had any carb ice problems (30 hrs since rebuild) Flown in plenty of water, and even a bit of snow/hail. Only today just before shutdown I had a real low idle, low enough that the impulse couplings on the mags kicked in. She did not quit, but it was close. I suspect it was carb ice. Of-course only thought of that after I shut her off and pushed it back inside the hangar.

IM guessing you have a stromberg carb. So do i, same problem occasionally happened before i cleaned my carb out at every annual.

Clean your carb, just my guess. Carb ice would have degraded your rpm setting slowly, as you added more throttle to compensate for the lowering of RPM, or, it was really cold out.

I went out today, 15 degrees F with 18 Gusting to 28.....carb heat was the only answer to keeping that engine alive with a power off glide...applying throttle slowly with carb heat on, until reaching desired RPM setting, then closing carb heat, is my only way to keep her running in the cold....oh, and i always try to descend with a little power.........falling leaf.

      cheers

Had a similar problem with mine in the past. Was down to a leak in the intake manifold leaning the mixture. Tightened the intake hoses and cured the problem. I now check the hoses every 25 hrs as part of eh oil change.

Do you notice any dead spots when going from idle to 1500 rpm? If you do this is symptomatic of a leaking intake manifold.

          Tom,
As you know, the humidity and temp has been unseasonably high in the northeast for this time of year and with the higher humidity and 70+/- temps carb ice is very, very common.I would suspect carb ice. However you said that you are getting a lot of rpm drop with carb heat, that is a sure tell-tell sign that you are running real rich or you were already picking up ice on your run-up.If you are running rich and made an idle approch or a constant rpm approch the carb might have loaded up a little bit and then quit when you lost enough airspeed to keep the prop turning(I.E.,the load of the prop at a slow taxi idle may have caused it to quit).IMHO I would say it is a combanation of weather, carb ice and maybe even a little temper tantrum from your bird after setting for 5 weeks.I wouldn't worry much about it unless it starts to happen more often.

I'll go along with the 'running rich' theory. That was my experience.
engine quit on short final, had also noticed engine running rough except at full throttle.
Seriously considered rebuilding the carb. Instead pulled the plugs, they were very black!. Then realized I had left the primer unlocked!!!!! No more problems........

Re: My engine quit after landing?!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all the responses. I don't think I'm running rich since it turns up real well, burns right at 4 gallons per hour and the exhaust pipe is always nice and clean. I'm going to check those intake boots more often though. The strange thing about this is that it went right back to running fine and stayed that way. It could have been ice but I always get a large drop on the carb heat regardless of temperature and even at cruise rpm in flight. It definitely loaded up though so I'm thinking maybe the float valve had some dirt under it or something. I know it wasn't the primer..........We'll see how it goes from here.

Re: My engine quit after landing?!

My engine quit once after landing. Really confused me as the thing always runs great. It started right back up which, although I was relieved, just confused me more. I decided to run through my preflight run up and found that I hadn't shut the primer all the way. It was cracked just a hair, which was enough....

                  Hey Dan,

Can you be a more specific on your recommendation to "...clean the carb..."?

Do you mean disassembly or just removal and spray down with Gunk...?

Would running Marvel Mystery oil keep the carb clean? (Oops, here we go again with the MMO)

Thanks all for the great string. Learning every day.
