When it comes to what is legal it depends who has the better lawyer. After a violation is issues by the FAA, fight the violation all the way to court before a judge. If you can convince the judge what you did was not illegal. You win.

RE READ .You used the word installation. It aint an installation. I agree if one were to "install" a non approved item it would be illegal. Who is installing items illegally on their planes? SOO it appears we need to define install. NOW lets look again at the FAR BOOK BOOK not your local operate independent FSDO . I believe ....believe that an item not fixed (attached) to the plane is fair game. Ah now we discuss "attached" get out the BOOK.
Norsee changes a lot of rules, and avionics that doesn’t require a flight manual supplement “hand held with a panel dock” is a log entry, with maybe a w&b change.

        Tim,

I am chuckling at my post quoted from many moons ago. (Almost 20 years come next year) Time has ( at least in my minds eye) shown all is good with, non INSTALLED equipment OR We have thousands now.... criminals sporting yoke mounted GPS equipment .

To the "you could go to court and fight" thought..meaning you could end up fighting the FAA on this or a zillion other things..True actually as we have seen extream garbage over the years happen...try the Bob Hoover case on fir size to begin with...if one is even old enough to remember....meantime let's move along. Life is too short.
