  • Long Mount and Extended Baggage

    Guys,

Is it possible to have the extended baggage and long mount on a BC12D-85 without going to 1500# GW. My plane is at 1280# now with a C85-8 short mount and on floats it is a little aft cg with less than 8 gals in the nose tank. I would like to put the long mount on....but I want to keep the plane at 1280 Land and 1351 Floats to keep it in LSA cat. Can this be done legally?

I don't think so...there is no scope within the STC. You could go for a 337 or your own STC?

Also, unless you are transporting ping-pong balls, why would you want the large baggage compartment?

I too have the short mount with extended baggage but my engine is the C90 with full electrics . I am approved for 200 lb behind the seat but like you mentioned it can be in the aft c of g limits when the nose tank is almost empty . I'm also running 1650 floats so I probably have more weight forward than most , though I did opt for a metal prop on the nose instead of the carbon fiber one I originally used .

Oh, and B.T.W. , as you probably guessed my T is an experimental .

Robert, can you fill us in with the electrical setup...what are you using for power generation...B & C? Dick

Are you guys still on floats? I guess this will be the last hurrah, by November the ice is forming and the skis come out soon. I have a new set of Baumann BF1500's on my plane now and when the FAA flight test is complete later this week I'll post more to update all of you fellow float guys as to the status and performance of the Taylorcraft on the new Baumann's. They are shorter than the old BF-1420's...they are now the same length as an Edo 1320, but are 1" wider and 1 1/2" deeper giving a 1536# displacement per float. They have pump outs and option of 1 or 2 storage hatches per float...they have fluted bottoms just like the 1320 and water performance is very promising....Joe Birkemeyer at Baumann is tweaking them now for optimum performance, he's playing with the rear strut length to find the best angle with respect to the airfoil. Total installed weight is 190#. I'll post more when we have the final set up....Here is a picture or two (I didn't have my digital so picture quality is poor)

I believe you can do the extented baggage and long mount without doing the gross weight increase. All airframe mods are done on a 337 and then approved weather it be a field approval or an STC.Gross weight changes are a seprate form all together. If everything can be kept in the CG limits then you should be ok.Of course you do have to submit and/or re-do your weight&balance for any changes to the airframe, the 1500lbs gross is an "ad on" and not a must when doing this conversion.

              Dick,
yes, a B&C starter and alternator, a border cell battery the size of a motorcycle battery at only 9 lbs. My electrical system is an electronic breakerless setup with annunciator panel in the dash. If I remember corerctly
it only weighs 1/4 lb all together. Works well and is REALLY light .
