When making the rear cross brace removable, what have people done with this tube?

And yeah, I robbed this picture from Dick Smith.

This is what is on Tim's 337, but I don't understand how he got there.

Yes you can remove that tube, it was replaced by 2 vertical tubes and the seats had tracks like a pacer or Tripacer have. Seen it done and that design was used on the f-21

Tim, if I am understanding you correctly, the 2 vertical tubes are removed and replaced with 2 that slant the other direction as shown on that 337?

              Hi Tim,

The sketch shows the tube in place, it's not obvious to me how it can be removed from the two 7/8" sleeves. How is that done?

Also, do you fly the plane with the tube removed or do you replace it and put the bolts in after loading cargo and before you fly?

              Dave

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe the "AN3 Bolt welded to tube" acts as a pin to connect the whole thing.

You fly with the tube in place.

This would be the same as the way the removable crossbar is on most PA-18s.

Here is a picture of an F22 fuse which, correct me if I am wrong, illustrates the vertical tube Tim is talking about.

Yes, that is it, I am helping my parents this week so I was not able to find a picture. There is no cross tube in the later F series airplanes and seats were adjustable. Tim

So, we are talking about 2 different mods in this thread.

                      1. Removing the crossbar permanently, like in the later F-series

                      2. Making the crossbar removable - pinned on both sides so that it can be removed for loading cargo and reinstalled for flight.

I am interested in doing #2, but I am still confused as to what to do with this tube for that mod.

Taylor, from my understanding that tube is cut out and another is welded back in, only at a reverse angle

I should add, when Taylorcraft removed the crosstube for the F22, they trussed outside of the old vertical door post.

It is also how they widened the fuselage, and they got rid of those wonderful tubes through the door opening.

                              Thanks for clarifying that
