Re: The Miracle of TIG Welding!

    Bill,

My IA says that the 1/32 birch ply is required. It's shown on the spar which is part of the STC.
I have one question. Will your IA sign off on the STC when your not
    following the STC????

Re: The Miracle of TIG Welding!

Like I have said before..... it boils down to which part of the STC paperwork the IA thinks is more important to follow.

In the absence of any engineering data from ANYONE, any official explanation, anything from Harer, anything from Gilberti, anything from CG Taylor, anything from Harry Ingram, anything from the Taylorcraft Foundation, anything from Houdini, Liberace, Elvis, or Mussolini, and the absence of any plywood parts callout on the STC, my IA will see the "no changes" text as being the most clearly explained and valid choice.

This approach allows the compression struts to fit correctly, the bolts to remain the same length, etc. etc. etc. that all would have had to be explained in the STC otherwise.

I will tell my IA that the original spars on at least one 1950 Model 19 were FAA approved and certified at 1500 pounds without these doublers. If they were important from a structural reasoning, the Model 19 would have had them. Should be a no-brainer for the IA and the FAA to sign off on.

If I show him the drawing 2569 you sent me, he will ask "Where are the factory instructions for which Taylorcrafts these go on and which ones they do not...what do these wafer thin doublers do...why didn't your buddies on the internet figure this out and have a definitive explanation... why didn't your buddies in the Taylorcraft Club get to the bottom of this years ago...why are they not explained in the STC?" I'm embarrassed to answer a couple of these questions for him.

My fittings have been welded (twice now) and are a done deal. I will not be taking them apart again.
