  • bc12d metal fuselage hat section stringers

Has anyone used these on the sides and upper / lower fuselage and have any idea how many 8 foot lengths were needed for the whole aircraft ?

I have quite a lot of existing aluminium hat sections (currently 7 OFF - 8 foot lengths) but am looking to order a few more to complete our project and as they are quite cheap want to complete the project to a high standard.

Also interested in how these are attached to the fuselage frame?

Thanks in advance for the advice...

If you are using 8' sections you will have to splice the ones on top, the ones on bottom, and the long ones on the sides. I wrapped several layers of electrical tape to tubes to protect and safety wired the hat sections by drilling through the vertical webs.

I used an old spar to make my stringers from. Cut it up in strips and came out great, no splicing

Originally the aluminium stringers were held in place by coil springs. The problem is the springs will eventually rub the finish off the fuselage tubes leaving them exposed to the elements. I used koroseal and a dab of proseal to secure mine, both wood and metal.

You'll want to shim the side stringers in several places aft of the doors to get a nice shape.

Good call on shimming the stringers. I added several shims in different places to make the stringers form straight line. Stand back at the tail and eyeball every one of them and shim as needed.
