    I have seen most references to strut thermometers being used to get accurate free stream temperature, similar for the reason to use a calibrated pitot static boom on test aircraft. The big dial was so you could both see it and have fine increments of measurement. Advertisement attached from "Flying and Popular Aviation", Nov. 1941.

    A search revealed a couple old eBay links for $50 but you could not open the link.
