  • No air filter?

An acquaintance just bought N43497. She's beautiful. We went out and gave her the once over - I pointed out somethings I had learned to look for.
Then I noticed it didn't have an air filter. I've been to skip over things, but the Brackett holder and sponge filter weren't there. There wasn't even a square hole in the cowling for it. The FAA Registry describes the engine simply as: " A&C65 SERIES".

    Re: No air filter?

I don't know if all the factory aircraft had them or if it was something that was added later. Mine is a 46 BC12-D and it doesn't have one either. I'm in the process of rebuilding her now and have thought about adding one..On that note, does anyone know where I can find the fairing that would go around the front of the air filter bracket on the nose bowl and lower cowl?

      Captslick:

I have the same no filter/air scoop on my BD12-D.
I sent you a private message about it.

without a filter, what prevents the engine's ingestion of dust, dirt, and small children? - Mike

Wellll.... the prop takes care of the small children. Stay off dusty strips, and the bugs add volumetric efficiency? ;-)

is this what she has for an air scoop?

I just got rid of mine and need to buy an air-box w/filter since I tend to spend a lot of time "off airport" and don't want to ruin my freshly overhauled engine.

              Re: No air filter?

The original war-era models all had unfiltered air. The Brackett filter was an aftermarket add-on in some form.

My 1945 model has the original unfiltered air box, and on my 1946 project, I am removing the brackett filter and returning it to original configuration. I prefer the lines.

My opinion is that unless you are in a gritty environment (Sahara, Australia, Texas, etc) then the Brackett filter, although desirable, is not 100% necessary.
