  • Seat cross-tube lath

A friend has a seat cross-tube looking like the photo below: in that there are no "stubs" to attach a wooden lath for the seat sling. Note the "lattice" cushion support. He inherited this aircraft from a sale, so does not know the original configuration.

Would this arrangement be original for a pre-war?

If so, how does the sling attach?

Or is it a can of worms?

    Re: Seat cross-tube lath

    Rob,
Sorry I can't help ya on this one.I have seen a couple projects in the past that have the same setup on the fuslage but niether had a seat sling of any kind with them.I'm curious to know the answer to this one as well.
On another note.....I seen an old Bendix mag laying on the floor board in the photo.I was wondering if you would sell me one of the ceramic inserts that the plug wire slides into?
    Thanks

They're not mine...just a friends. I will pass the message on.

I do have a couple of serviceable bendix "bricks" (un-shielded)...would they have the same things?

        Rob,
I'm not sure.If you look down in the holes in the top of the mag where the plug wires go in you will see the brown or black ceramic insert. At first look it will look as if it is part of the mag case but it will slide out if you're careful. It might take a little WD-40 and/or removing the top of the mag case to insure you don't break it trying to remove it.

Doesn't look like the pre-war seat arrangements I have seen. I believe the pre-wars had the canvas sling wrapped around the board at the fwd lower end and then up and over the seatback bar and laced ? Auster??

For clarification I took a pic of my seat arrangement along the front. This is a 1939 bc-65. You can see the support stubs for the wooden lath.

Howard and Roger: thanks for those pics...looks like my pal has a "modified" seat arrangement.

Kevin, my own pair of mags are Bendix SF4RN-8. The photo below shows the inserts.

I am unwilling to divide them for pieces, because they are both serviceable and hence have value as a working pair. (I am hoping to replace them with Eismann's).

Hey Robert, I think they removed the stubs. The pre-war I had used stubs just like my post war.

The seat set up here looks just like that of an Aeronca Champ and I'd bet that someone abandoned the sling and put those black "straps" in instead of teh slingthen they put the cushion right on top of those black "straps". I bet the cushions were thicker than the normal ones.
