  • Comments on stopping/strating....

Couple of days ago I received the following letter. I've removed the author's name to avoid embarrasing him/her. As I'm (of course) interested in prolonging engine live, I'd like to hear your thoughts :

One of my pet peeves for a long time has been the way pilots &
instructors shutdown & start gravity feed aircraft engines. By GRAVITY
FEED, I'm refering to your vintage non-electric Taylorcraft that has no
positive mixture shut-off like modern day aircraft have. I've seen them run
the engine up, close the throttle & then turn the switch to off.

This practice gives the engine a real good fuel bath & increases wear
many fold on start up not to mention the enhancement of RUST. Many of you
understand these techniques & I invite your comments. There is no telling
how much money has been spent by owners who think they have leaky carbs all
brought on by turning their engines off with the throttle closed. There is
no way to tell how much fuel has been
    wasted either.

I'm going to list a number of things here that if done will
increase the life of your engine, make starting & shutdown easier & save you
    money.

Engines with mixture controls are shut down by starving the engine of fuel.
The following has been proven to work best with gravity feed engines:

    1. SHUTDOWN..Close the throttle, let the engine wind down, turn
the mag switch to off & at the same time, open the throttle fully. After the
engine stops, close the throttle. This might take both hands.

    2. START.. Cold or Hot. Close the throttle completely. Be sure
your prop man understands & turn the switch ON after the prop is in
position. Give the CONTACT command to the prop person. Turn the prop
until the engine starts. The engine will start exactly when it is ready
because you are primimng with the mags HOT. Have the prop person understand
that the mags are HOT from the GIT-GO without any priming and tell them to
simulate the speed of an electric STARTER. The reason for simulating a
STARTER is, with impulses on the mags, you can actually disengage the
impulses if you turn the prop too fast. Too slow is also not a good idea.

I hope this helps you prolong the life of your engine & makes
starting easier. One other thing, an ounce or two of Mystery oil in your
gas once in a while will keep your carb clean & will usually stop leaky
    float valves.

I read about this exact shutdown procedure years ago - can't remember where....... The engine seemed to just wind down on its own with the throttle open, unlike the clankity-clank that could be heard with the throttle closed. No science here - it just sounded better!

I always did it religiosly, along with the Marvael M.O. Treatment. Never had a bit of trouble with my Tcraft or 85 hp Cub.

Chris - with the mag off, but the engine turning, won't advancing the throttle introduce gasoline vapor into the cylinders? Won't that aid in washing oil off the cylinder walls and increase the likelihood of rust formation? - Mike

Mike, the opposite is the case...full throttle on run-down stops fuel flowing (on carburettors without accelerator pumps). No fuel = no over-running and no washing the oil off the cylinders.

It is the same reason why to clear over-primed cylinders, you pull the prop through mags OFF and FULL throttle...there is no fuel introduced. (but only ever do this with someone at the controls!)

          WOW
Who props your engine ? King Kong?
Maybe you should have him stimulate instead of simulate?
And as for the Two Hands thing, with the new Paris Hilton Video out im not sure an extra hand is available

I'll confirm the correct procedure for shutting down the A-65 is to set idle speed, let the engine stabalize, shut the mags off and simultaneously pushing the throttle in. One of the things this does is help to prevent pre-ignition. Pull back to idle after the engine has fully stopped.

I want a picture by my name! How do I do that?

Jim, first you have to create the picture.
Current rules are: max 8000 bytes and 100*100 pixels (whichever is the lesser). Save it to your hard drive.

Then go to myProfile (yellow button at the top) and "edit options".

The bottom option is called "avatar" (meaning picture...why can't they use the word "picture"? Probably Latin or something) and then add your saved picture.

From this, you can dowload your saved picture.

                  thank yoiu

Ah Robert thank u for such sage advise always. Grasshoppers have to learn somehow ; idle down, stabilize, turn off switch (duhhh) , and open throttle that always works for me......
for start up I have been reading the discussions and was not going to comment; HOWEVER first know your engine; below 35 degrees here I prime one shot, pull through 6 blades, throttle is barely "cracked"to allow fuel to be "sucked" in. Switch on both, one impuilse mag on left ( bottom) plugs. One easy flip pull through compression & boom she is running... above 50 degrees , no prime same procedure. In between maybe 1/2 shot of prime. I have the long strock primer not the little pull & let go.
