    Re: Fuel Question

    Darryl,

Fortunately, (unfortunately), we are one of those corn growing states. I, too, wonder when I will have to start burning 100 LL exclusively due to alcohol. Until that time I will use the cheaper auto fuel. If it is worth the trouble and money check the premiums of the majors and see if any of them are alcohol free. I know auto fuel is pretty expensive out there. Sometimes it is worth the money saved. Our 100 LL is $2.99/gallon at our airport compared to unleaded, which just dipped below $2.00/gallon to $1.97. Rumor has it our airport manager pockets $1.00 per gallon profit for the 100LL. Here is the disclaimer: I do not base my aircraft in Springfield, however.

    Cheers,

    Marty

      Re: Fuel Question

A year or so ago our county (Dutchess, NY) switched from MTBE to ethanol. I had not noticed and I mistakenly used auto fuel with ethanol.

I found that the ethanol in the gas acted as a solvent to the shellac on the cork float for the fuel gauge and also on the sloshing compound that had been used in the tanks.

Result was a sticky goo from the solvent action and I had to completely clean the fuel system. Lot of work from a dumb oversight.

      I now use 100LL.

Airport personnel tell me that Ulster county has non-ethanol mogas.

      Dave.
