  • Brazing -

I'd like to learn how to do light brazing.
I noticed a MAPP gas cylinder and accessories at HomeDepot.
Can I do light brazing (1/16" metal) with that package, or do I need to locates someone with an oxy-actelyne outfit? - Mike

You will never regret learning to master a cutting torch, and the increadable flexibility an Oxy-Acetylene rig gives you.

Its also a tool for making tools.

For brazing check out the portable units the HVAC installers use.

      Mike,

In order to braze, you will have to have temps in excess of 800 deg F. You can purchase an adequate oxy-acet rig at your local welding supply shop. I use victor gages but you can go with a lesser expensive set and do fine. I would highly recommend you check with your local Vo-Tec. They will generally offer a short course(6-8 wks) which you can complete at night and will give you the basic skills you need. Then, it's just a matter of "burn'n rod" to get your technique down. The Mapp & prestolite gases are for lower temps and soft solder applications. Highly recommend the vo-tech!

      Good luck.
