And when setting the timing, you want the impulse out of the picture, so the points open at 30* BTDC it sounds like the mag was installed wrong with your earlier post that it has happened since the mag was installed, it just needs a little more work and you'll be on your way. gary

      Re: Engine starting issue

Yes, you are correct. When propping the pawls hit the dowel and the mag stops turning . The mag gear keeps turning until the spring pressure no longer keeps the pawls in place and the spring spins the mag over after it releases. This is the retarded timing that keeps the engine from firing at 30 before and kicking back. Once the rpm comes up the centrifugal force on the pawls are not engaging the dowel pin and the timing is back to 30 degrees held by the spring pressure. This is why you want to trip the impulse then back the mag up to the e-gap before installing it on the engine. Your AP/IA will know how they operate and maybe can explain it better than I have. Years ago when I had the old Bendix SF mags on my T-craft I was about the only one that didn't have trouble starting it. Others wouldn't flip it fast enough to make it go. I put the Slick conversion on it years ago and now just pull it thru and , snap, and its setting there idling. So much easier to start. Hope this helps you under stand how the impulse works. I sure like my impulse mags, especially since my shoulders are shot. Starting to get old. LOL

I felt like Slick mags were a message from GOD compared to the old bread box mags....

          Re: Engine starting issue

The problem was the mag shop put the stop pin in the wrong hole the second hole is 25*from the hole the pin was in.
So the coupling now hit the pin a little more than 30* BTDC It now fires at 5* BTDC when propping
          Thanks for all the suggestions
