  • Thinking about buying a Taylorcraft. Anyone familiar with N4418U?

    Hi all,

I've been out of the Taylorcraft world since about six years ago when I sold my '46 BC-12D. Now I'm thinking about getting back into it with something like a F-19 or 21.

The 19's and 21's seem somewhat scarce. Does anyone know a good one for sale?

Is anyone familiar with the F-21B N4418U?(link below) It's on trade-a-plane for an asking price of $47,500. That seems pretty high to me, but I haven't been looking long enough to see any other 21B's come up for sale.

Depending on how nice the fabric and interior is, I don't think its completely out of line. You can't hardly buy a low horse super cub for that. They rarely come up for sale and I loved our F-21. I would see how negotiable he is.

You make a good point. I guess I was comparing the F-21 to the BC-12. At twice the price, it seems like a huge difference. Is the F-21 twice the airplane the BC-12 is? I suppose a Super Cub or PA-12 would be a better comparison as far as class of aircraft. However, the Pipers also seem to be overpriced by a large fanatical group of cub people.

Twice the HP, twice the braking power, twice the luggage room, basic IFR, flies 15 mph faster easy. It is alot more capable airplane, that just happens to fly like your old BC12d, except with confidence. I have owned a flown 3 bc12d with a65, my deluxe with O-200, and our '81 F-21. I would take the F-21 back in a heartbeat.

nose bowl, top cowl spine, engine mount will be difficult to replace if its damaged since they seems to be no spares. Also the "B" has all the fuel in the wing so tanks would also be difficult to source. Most everything else should be fairly easy to get or fabricate.

Re: Thinking about buying a Taylorcraft. Anyone familiar with N4418U?

Third owner since new, I have a sweet 1978 F-19, N2000U, that I've owned for 30 years and am reluctantly offering for sale due to continuing medical issues. (Wife's share has been for sale since I bought the Harley in 2007). Serial No. 124 of 151 built, 920 hrs, approx. 520 hrs engine. McCauley 7443 (floatplane) prop, 24 gallon fuel system, quick-drain oil system, full-flow El Reno Aviation oil filter kit, Brackett air filter, firewall and forward cabin soundproofing, right-side brakes, full-sized carpeted baggage area rated at 72 lbs. Zinc chromated 4130 frame, stainless wires (floatplane option, but has never been on floats). Hangared since Ceconite recover in 1994 (fuselage and wings). Original paint scheme, Daytona White with Madrid Red trim.

Great performer, perfectly rigged, flies hands off, 115 mph cruise on 6 gph. Peterson autogas STC. Vacuum system, artificial horizon, directional gyro, Narco 11A COM (have ICOM IA-200 ready to install), Sigtronics 400 panel-mounted intercom, headset jacks, handheld mic jack, Clark PT-300 PTT switch, Gill G-25 battery, Whelen tail strobe, wing-mounted landing light, nav lights, cabin light, folding tie-down rings, winter kit.

Aircraft based at Brewer, Maine. Overdue for annual, right mag (or a plug) currently running rough. She needs to be flown. Let me know here if interested, and I'll get to work on a selling price, which will likely be in the 28 to 32K range depending on status of annual.

Rodney, I would be interested to hear more and see some pictures.
