  • throttle cable replacement

    Hi all
I tried to install a new throttle cable today but it's too short. The one I bought is the C180 cable by McFarland P/N mcs1222-1s it measures a little under 42" which leaves it about 2" short ( original routing).

This seems to be the part that others have used. The total length is actually a bit longer than the original, but the outer cable is 2" shorter so there's no way it can reach under the exhaust and over the oil tank ie the original routing. I don't see it fitting any other routing either.

Anyone have a different p/n or solution?

    Thanks
    S

    Re: throttle cable replacement

I've got a McFarlane throttle setup on my Taylorcraft with +4" F-19 engine mount. Previous owner did the installation. Is there a P/N on them? Never looked but maybe under the panel on that part before the cable. I can look and take a pic of the installation if wanted.

      Thanks Gary
Mine is A65, stock mount, stock exhaust so probably not much in common with your F19.

I've been in touch with the McFarland tech department looking for a sutable off the shelf cable.

The C180 cable, while the correct overall length, has an outer sheath that is a little over 2" shorter than the original cable, plus it's about 5/16" diameter so by the time it's routed under the exhaust shroud and over the oil tank it's impossible to line it up with the throttle arm on the carb.

I think we may have found a 44" cable with a flex coupling and 10-32 rod end which will be ideal. I'll post the info once I get it sorted.

        I like this style: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...yABEgLEJvD_BwE

The McFarlane is expensive but well made. I don't care for the small Cessna compatible knob. Other than that it works as advertised. They sell larger knobs and I might upgrade.

          Re: throttle cable replacement

I was able to put a 1/4-20 helicoil in my original large ivory coloured knob so it now fits the McFarland.

I was tempted by the 800 cable but it would be several inches too long and is not certified

Very good Scott. I'm sure the Ivory looks good. I also wonder how anyone ever flew back in the 1930-1970's without accessory vendors offering their wares. They have led us into temptation, but have not delivered is from the evil of original design.

              Update

I ended up purchasing a 299505-0101 cable which is for a Cessna P206. It has a knuckle/flex joint, has a 3/16" pushrod, 1/2" panel mount and is about 44" total length.

I installed it today, first following the factory routing ie under the exhaust. This cable is significantly more substantial than the original Taylorcraft unit and I didn't like the relatively tight bends necessary for the stock configuration. As far as I can determine, the only positive of this routing is it's easier to get the top exhaust shroud off for the routine inspection.

Anyway I ended up routing the cable through a different firewall hole (approximately 2" above the original) , and over the exhaust. This results in smooth shallow bends and better "geometry" for the throttle arm on the Stromberg.

This cable is also long enough that the exhaust shroud can still be removed without disconnecting the throttle, and room for a 1/2" spacer at the panel end so that the friction control clears the bottom of the instrument panel nicely.

Had to make a new bracket, with a fork, for the engine end but otherwise the install was straightforward.

I'll post photos on my blog... soon.
