  • Taylorcraft Trip

I haven't posted here in a while, but last week had a neat trip in a 1941 Taylorcraft BC12-65, from Louisville, Kentucky to Fullerton, California (just east of Los Angeles). It was a delivery flight to a new owner, 2,249 miles, and flying time was 25:40 for an average ground speed of 87.5 mph. Total fuel burn was about 130 gallons (didn't fill up at the end, so estimating), for about 5 gallons per hour. Engine was a 75 Continental, cruise rpm about 2,400, so a little more fuel burn than a 65. It had two 6 gallon wing tanks, which was a real help with making longer legs.

Departed Bowman Field in Louisville about 12:30 local (after airlining down from DC in the morning), first stop was Creve Coeur near St. Louis, then on to Springfield, Missouri. On the second day it was IFR until 10:30 local, and winds were forecast to be gusting 30 and even 40 in Oklahoma, so I went mostly south, to Mena, Arkansas (winds only gusting 25), and then on to Cleburne, Texas (winds less than 20), just south of Fort Worth.

    A few pictures:

Crossing the Mississippi River just south of St. Louis

First stop on the third day was Sweetwater, Texas

Then on to Pecos, Texas, then across West Texas

Last stop in Texas (it is a big state!) was at Fabens, near El Paso. Then on to Lordsburg, New Mexico

From Gila Bend I flew over to Imperial, California, 54 feet below sea level, then up past the Salton Sea, through the Banning Pass, and into the LA basin. I was careful navigating from there on, since I don't use a GPS, and there's a lot to avoid, but the weather was clear, and landmarks good, so I angled down to Perris, then up to Corona, then started following the 91 freeway to Fullerton. Unfortunately, although I could hear the Fullerton Tower fine, they couldn't hear me, so I went back to Corona. I think the lack of an external antenna for the hand held was restricting the range of transmission, but I called the tower on the phone, and they agreed to let me come in no radio. I gave them an ETA, took off and circled for a few minutes until I would hit it on time, and then went on in. From about 3 miles out they could hear me OK, so that helped. It was a good trip, the airplane started right up every time, didn't burn much oil, and ran smooth and cool. What a great way to see the country.

The buyer is a corporate jet pilot who wanted something small and vintage to fly, and I think he got a good airplane.

At Fullerton at the end of the trip

Great trip report, Andrew! I was in Gila Bend last April (deserted but there was lots of cold water in the fridge!).

              These trips can become addictive!
