  • I had to make a phone call I never wanted to make

I received a call last night from a friend at the airport, it was around 6;45 pm, his dad was out flying and was supposed to be back around 5:00 and they were overdue. The 2 pilots in the airplane didn't like to fly at night and right now it starts getting dark around 5ish. He didn't know who to call or what to do to report them being overdue, so I told him that I would make the calls.

I called the tower to get the N-number and verify that the airplane was still gone. The controller gave me the N-number and verified that the airplane had still not returned and they flew west bound towards the Great Salt Lake. With that info I called Flight Service and reported an overdue airplane.

I didn't have much information for Flight Service but I started the process and gave flight service what info I had and the phone number for my friend who had more info. I think that the briefer was surprised that we were calling within an hour and a half for an airplane that had not filed a flight plane for a local flight.

My friend called me around 1030 and asked about driving around out by where his dad was reported to be flying and if he would be able to drive around that area. I recommended that he stay home until it was daylight. Driving around the desert at night, in my opinion, would be dangerous and you would not be able to see much

I received updates from FSS almost every hour for the first 2 hours and after that I think that the family pretty much received further updates. They explained that the process started with verifying with the local tower that the airplane was still missing, Then all of the local airports within 50 miles are asked if they landed there. Next the local sheriff's are sent out to the unincorporated strips to check there. After that, the Air Force Search and Rescue gets involved, they contacted Salt Lake International and had them pull the radar signature and it showed the airplane going down on Fremont Island, which is on the south end of Promitory Point (Golden Spike Monument, where the east meets west trains met) in the Great Salt Lake.

Update as of this morning, they have not been found but there is an Army Blackhawk and CAP flying looking for them. Its not looking good but I am hoping that they are found alive.

SO if you are going flying, make sure SOMEONE knows what area you are going flying and when you plan to be back. It would also help to make sure that person knows what the number is to FSS and that they know the N-number and what color the airplane is and what the cell phone number is for everyone on board. That way if you become overdue, they know when and who to call...

Yeah, there is actually 8 unofficial airstrips that have been put on in the last year or so, there used to be 3 from back in the day.

Ok on closer looking with 3D Google I see more lines that might be landing strips. What plane and have they frequented that location before?

172 and they may have landed there, but their route should have been farther north...along the promitory mountains.

Re: I had to make a phone call I never wanted to make

We had a plane several years ago from Indiana head to Mackinac Island, never showed up so CAP from here flew the 300 miles up there to look but found nothing. Turned out they had make it but didn't land, turned around & ran out of fuel just north of me. The pilot would have had a good landing but the passenger turned the yoke all the way taking off a wing & they ended up in a thick swamp just south of the fairground in Hartford. The pilot had broken legs so the passenger went for help but died on the other side of the plane. The pilot survived for 5 days chewing on his boot leather & recycling his urine. A pilot flying over say & reported it. They had to chainsaw their way in & the 1st person to touch the plane set off the ELT. I hope & pray your friends are sitting on a log waiting for rescue.

Sheriff’s deputies on Saturday were looking for a missing airplane along an edge of the Great Salt Lake.

I've had to make several death notifications over the years from when I was working at the PD. Anything like this is sad and upsetting to everyone involved. I hope they find everyone, OK.
                    Cheers,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, hopefully they are OK and will be found soon.

Using Google Maps' "share location" feature, my wife has my location continuously, to the minute and within a few feet as long as I am flying within cell service range, which is probably 80% of the time in the T-craft. It is a very useful feature. Typically she can see exactly where I am and where I am headed in realtime. If she can't see that, she can see when I left and what direction I was headed.

Re: I had to make a phone call I never wanted to make

I use SPOT -- a personal GPS. It's velcro'd to the glare shield. I turn it on when I depart and it sends my wife "blips" on a map, on her laptop, every 10 minutes.

If you're not familiar with SPOT, it has 4 buttons. The first button is simply on/off.

If I hit buttons 2 or 3, my wife gets one of the following messages depending on which one I use:

"I'm here. Everything is okay. I'll call you when I can."
"This is a HELP message. I'm okay, but please send for help ASAP."

The fourth button is what I call the "no-shit" button. It is essentially an S.O.S. and should only to be used in life-threatening situations. Hitting this button sends an S.O.S. alert along with my GPS coordinates to a GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center. The S.O.S. text (which I pre-prepared) includes information that the GEOS Search and Rescue folks would need to know about me (i.e. Medical conditions, allergies, prescriptions, etc.)

I pay around $150 per year for the service. The cost of the unit was extra. Haven't hit the third or fourth button yet so I can't say how well they work. Let's hope I don't have to.

A few years ago I got an e-mail from Best Buy they were closing out the green Spot units for $4.99/shipped so I bought 20 & gave them to anyone that would pay the yearly fee which was $99 for basic but at Thanksgiving & Christmas was 1/2 price. They do work well & you can allow sommeone to track you, send an I'm OK message or send help or SOS & it's all Sat not GPS.
