  • Where can I learn about the history of my L-2M?

AAC serial number 43-26752, Taylorcraftcraft #L 6317. I'd like to find out where it flew in the Air Corps, and anything else possible.

Also, is it possible to have a reproduction dataplate made?

I have logbooks back to 1954. I also have a bunch of AAC Microfiche that a previous owner obtained in 2001. I have no idea what is on it, but I can make out the AAC logo and the tail number, so it apparently is some type of AAC record on this plane, does anyone know where this would've come from? I need to find a microfiche reader/scanner so I can find more.

There was a place in Alabama, a historical unit for the Army Air Corp, that supplied the history, let me get to the shop and I have the address from when I got the papers for the L-2M I restored, gary

If you have any luck please let the rest of us know what you found and how. My 41 was "obtained" by the government from her private owner after Pearl Harbor and was sold back to civilian use after the war, but all records from 1942 to 1945 were missing from the logs. I was told that a past owner had found evidence she was turned over to the CAP and used on the mid Atlantic for sub patrols. I would really like to find out if my girl is a vet!

I gave them the serial number and two packs came back, the other was a P-47, the owner of the L-2M said he would like to have the P-47, wouldn't we all, but like we always said while restoring a bunch of warbirds, even if it was given to us, all we could do would be to sell it, it would be tough putting fuel in something running an R-2800

Actually it's very easy to put fuel in something running an R-2800. The fuel just runs into a big hole, hundreds of gallons at a time. What's tough is PAYING for it !

Try the Air Force Historical Research Agency, http://www.afhra.af.mil, located at Maxwell AFB, AL.

MBennarek is correct. The records for the L-2s are maintained by the USAF in AL. It's hit or miss on the records. My report contained just the movement card. My airplane moved a couple of times and then transferred to RFC for disposal as surplus.

The general formula for converting T-craft construction number to USAAF serial number is supposedly 20688 + the T-Craft build number. It doesn't work for the last batch of 66 L-2s (6253-6718).

The cross reference to 43-26752 as a P-47 is screw-up by someone at Maxwell. The P-47 referenced as almost assuredly 42-26752 -- one of a batch of P-47Ds from a 1942 contract -- 42-26389/26773

The military dataplate's are available as reproductions although the ones I've seen don't use the correct font.
