  • Bringing an L-2M home this weekend

I go to LA to pick this up and fly it home to KWEA on Sunday. Pretty excited about it. Need to add a radio, swap to an O-200, and replace the wood panel with the correct metal panel.

My apologies for the incorrect paint. I didn't do it.

Apologies not needed here. Like adopting a new dog. How it smells is not your responsibility. Also, even though I really like originality, staying alive is more important, and if high vis marking will help with that I say go for it!

      Hank,

My plane is painted a fairly bright red and people don't see it. Most airplanes are painted white, which as a former r/c modeler I can tell you is not the best color to paint a plane as it blends with the sky. There were a lot of studies done regarding color and the RAF did away with yellow training aircraft as it didn't help. They went with black as the color that can best be seen at distance but is hot in summer. Dark blue will work, also. Bright yellow or bright orange at closer ranges. There are still stories of brightly painted aircraft involved in mid-airs so it comes down to looking out of the windows.
      Cheers,
      Marty

Re: Bringing an L-2M home this weekend

          Hi all
I saw a L-2 post so i thought i would ask on this thread,

I am the new owner of a 1943 L2 Salvage (noted earlier on this site).
I have searched high and low for the L2 blueprints without luck so i would like to ask if anyone has a line on were they might be obtained
          any help is appreciated.
I am looking at the O200a STC from Terry Bowden, any opinions on that??

the plan is to restore the plane and Paint to original but for the possible change to the engine (i really want a starter)

          thanks again

Paul, I'm buying an O-200 that has a new Skytech lightweight starter. I don't intend to use the starter, would you be interested in it? Or at least in seeing pictures?

I intend to install an O-200A as well, I've already spoken with Terry on the phone about the STC and it doesn't seem like too much trouble.

Paul, I still have to pick up the engine but will do that in the next week or two and will send pictures. It is new. It has a new alternator as well that I will not use if you are interested.

I did get my new L-2M home this weekend, roughly 4.5 hours. Had a ball in it.

From your first post on this thread I thought you were picking your plane up in Los Angeles (LA). When you said you made it home to KWEA in Texas in 4 1/2 hours I was really impressed ! Then I realized that LA also means Louisiana.

Steve, we talked before and you know that I've owned and flown my L-2M for a good many years. And given a lot of dual instruction in the plane. So I've had a lot of time to observe and analyze how other people fly it and see how it behaved in many different hands besides my own. For a retired flight test engineer, this has been an interesting study in handling qualities.

If you would like to call me on the phone at eight oh five four eight nine, four oh seven eight, I can share some observations with you.

Dick, I'd certainly appreciate learning from you. I will give you a call in the next few days, I appreciate the offer! I wish it would get home from California in 4.5 hours. Maybe with the O-200.

I can say that getting back in an L-2 after about 13 years, it is "pleasant" to land compared to my Pietenpol. It floats forever, where the Pietenpol stopped flying in 2-3 seconds with power off at low speed, and would drop out from under you. That also means I'm bringing the T-craft in slower than needed, but I don't want to push the low limit until I've done some stalls at altitude. I've done stalls/spins in an L2 in the past, but it was a long time ago.
