      Re: stc ??

      Tim:

Yes, there is a STC for the skylight. It involves welding in some small fittings. Also, several skylights have been done on a 337. Try typeing "skylight" in the search box for the full story.

And please keep everyone posted on your project progress!

        Re: stc ??

Tim, the skylight STC is from Greg Clayton, in Alaska...well worth the work!! If your FAA inspector is up to snuff, they wont approve a mod that is already STC'd...to protect the rights of the people that put all the work into getting approvals done.

Tim, what you might do is contact your local FAA maintenance inspector and talk to him about maybe doing some sort of approval of lengthening the skylight to cover your baggage area, basing it on Greg's STC... if you (or your mechanic) have a really good working relationship with the FAA, sometimes things can be done that way...but just be sure to talk it over with them FIRST, showing them the STC and some drawings, then when you've got their blessing, start the work... it's worked for me in the past. Their hands are more and more tied everyday by bureaucracy, but there are still some good ones out there.

              Re: Skylight STC information (merged)

There are four Taylorcraft factory drawings, which I got from Forrest Barber, that show the exact thing you are talking about. The skylight and side windows extending back to cover the baggage area. This was on the F-21 and F-22 I believe. If you do it the same way as those drawings show, you should be able to do your skylight with not too much grief from the FAA. If the Clayton STC allows you to extend the skylight back over the baggage compartment, then it will be easier and cheaper to buy the STC and do it that way.

                Re: Skylight STC information (merged)

Tim, not to squelch your idea, but having installed a skylight (which I find to be a MAJOR improvement in visibility [thus safety])...I'm wondering about the advantage to be gained by the skylight extending all the way back to the end of the baggage compartment. Turning your head to take advantage of the larger area isn't easy to do. Plus you've doubled the area (thus the weight) of the Lexan or Plexiglas. It's not as light as fabric and you will gain weight, which is the bane of so many mods. I wouldn't want to go back to having no skylight, but I use it mainly to clear the area above and to look over the wing in a steep turn, rather than looking that far back. The rear sidewindows and the skylight above pretty much handle any motion I can wring out of my old neck! (and I don't need any more weight added unless the payoff is worth it...however that is strictly subjective...! Anyway, for what it's worth! I will include 2 pictures of one mod. I've seen, just to show that your idea is not outside the realm of possibility, but I don't believe I would be willing to pay the weight penalty! Dick

                      Re: Skylight STC information (merged)

                      I have a question,
My 1983 F21A has no skylight and I would love to add one do I need an STC or since the later F21 had them can I just add it. The second question is I like the cabin only skylight but since the later models had full all the way back units if I don't need an STC to add one can it be the short one?
Dick please keep sending pictures from Alaska every Taylorcraft you post is interesting and keeps us flat landers dreaming.
