  • Leading Edge Installation

    I'm just about finished with the rebuild of my right wing. I bought new leading edge sheeting from Univair. I'm a little disappointed that the bend isn't more complete. It's not gonna stay wrapped around the leading edge without considerable work.

    Do you all recommend making some type of bending jig to make it fit better to the wing's airfoil shape? Or do you think I can go ahead and install it using some ratcheting straps (and maybe some small boards laid span-wise)?

    I was thinking of screwing the bottom side down first and then wrapping the sheeting around, holding it in place with the straps for attaching the top. Haven't decided for sure yet though. Any previous experience/techniques are welcome - thanks!

    Re: Leading Edge Installation

    Here is one suggestion that may help, I'll give it step by step and an overview first.

    Overview- pull the leading edge into shape over the nose ribs with tiedown straps.

    1) buy a bunch of these => https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...4?cm_vc=-10005

    2) put leading edge in place and secure with tape or something temporary

    3) loop a strap from #1 around the rear spar and leading edge and keep it close to a compression strut and loop it over a rib at the leading edge.

    4) repeat #3 until you have a strap over every 2nd or 3rd rib

    5) ratchet the straps down one at a time a little by little until sort of taught to pull the leading edge into proper shape

    6) do not over tighten and damage

    Worked for me.

      Re: Leading Edge Installation

      Welcome to Univair's quality parts. I've done it like Dave says and it works, but any more I'm happier if things fit better to start with. I'd bend it a bit...go over a pipe to keep the radius at the nose.

          oh yeah I forgot step 7.

          7) put screws in the leading edge and remove ratchet straps.

            Make sure you have twist set in wing or leading edge will buckle and not be smooth if you dont pre set it.
