  • Taylorcraft West Coast FLy-in 2017- Paso Robles CA

    HI everyone, I am president of EAA Chapter 465 in Paso Robles CA.

    Our chapter has set an objective of hosting one type club fly-in a year.

    In 2015 we hosted a Mooney National Fly-in, in 2015 we had hosted a Lancair west coast event, the Navion's were here in 2013 for a national fly-in etc

    All went very well with technical discussions, guest speaker, visits to the local Warbird and Racecar museum, and visits to a couple of wineries

    Among other things we are also restoring a 1940 Taylorcraft in our Chapter

    Would there be any interest in us hosting a fall 2017 West Coast TaylorCraft Fly-in some weekend.

    Dave- I want to thank you for the invitation. It sounds like it could be a lot of fun. I am wondering if you really want to make this type of effort for the small group of people/aircraft that show up at our fly-ins... about 7 to 9 aircraft in the past few years. If still willing we can talk about it some more. Do you have a Month in mind for the event?
    Let me pass this on to some of the other leaders of the group and get back to you.

      [QUOTE=clear_prop1961;93578]Dave- I want to thank you ...................

      ===============================================

      Thanks for the come back, we were thinking about a weekend in mid or late Sept when everyone is back from summer adventures and it is cooler. Note our correct Chapter EM is [email protected] as one of your members indicated there was a typo in the last part of my previous post

      As I mentioned the local EAA Chapter 465 is involved in a project to restore a 1940 model Taylorcraft and as such would like to tie in the fly-in with hopeful completion of our Plane. We are also involving our Young Eagles in the restoration project

      We have organized and managed multiple type club fly-ins in Paso (i.e Navion, Mooney, Lancair, etc.) and sort of have an objective of sponsoring one each year. They are usually a 2 day event, with arrival say on a Friday or Saturday and departure on the following Saturday or Sunday.

      We could start with a meet and greet breakfast or lunch, then organize a place for an afternoon technical discussion, then visit our Race Car and Warbird Museum, then a tour of a couple of local wineries where we normally arrange transport with antique vehicles provided by the local antique and custom car clubs.

      We usually end the first day with a tour of a nice winery, tasting, and a dinner in a cave

      The next morning we can arrange breakfast in the Airport restaurant, and then people can head home. Or we can organize a short fly-our over the coastal mountains to Hearst Castle , or even a 40 minute trip South to New Cayam for breakfast where there is a nice strip and the Buckhorn restaurant which has its roots in the 1940s and Jonny Cash and others used to sing there. It is a hoot.

      Anyway, we can organize the event the way your members want.
      I will take the idea to our EAA Chapter meeting on January 11, and if our members are enthusiastic we will come back to you by January 15 with a suggested data and one page suggested program. We actually already discussed the idea informally at our Xmas party last Sunday. The City fathers and Airport Manager are very pro-aviation and supportive of these events.! We do allow camping on the airport, can find a quiet corner, and the terminal building is open 24/7 with good facilities

        Re: Taylorcraft West Coast FLy-in 2017- Paso Robles CA

        It certainly is a kind invitation, but at the wrong time of year for me. I have a certain vested interest in posting such a remark...Myself and at least two other Taylorcraft will be visiting California in mid-to-late April 2017, we fly from the mid-west.

        For Dave's benefit, I should add that I live in the UK but for the last 18 months or so have owned a Taylorcraft based near Chicago. I and friends fly our Taylorcraft around the US, spending time at museums and other interesting places to visit.

        Our very loose plan for California in April is to visit the likes of Flabob, Chino, Hollister, Frazier Lake. Paso Robles is somewhat en route between some of those places, so we would certainly be interested in visiting, even if it's not the chosen fly-in date.

          Rob- The west coast Taylorcraft group are still planning a spring fly-in, May 12-13 at Reedley, CA for your information if you can work it in your schedule. If not some of us would be glad to host you over night or just for lunch. I could also provide ideas for sightseeing/air museum stops in CA if you are looking for ideas. Chino of course has two first class museums as well as two mini museums (private owners). There is also Castle Air Museum, the Hiller museum and a few others. I'm based at Frazier Lake by the way. Let me know if I can be of help.
