  • Prewar Cowling Alloy/Temper?

Time to rework the old bottom cowling (flat wrap, not the nose bowl) on the '39BL. No identifying #'s visible on aluminum. I'm thinking 1100? It has the reinforcing wires around the edges. You can leave permanent dents in it by squeezing it between your thumb and finger. What was the original spec?

In a conversation with Dorothy Feris years ago she told me that they used 3003H14 aluminum. That is what is used on the L-2 cowling. Dick

Thanks Dick. That was my next guess;-). Std. Aircraft Handbook says 3003 possesses nearly same properties as 1100 and is slightly stronger.

        Like this one ?

Cost me a bunch, from the local automotive panel-beater.

Nice! I like the louvers. I'll give it a try, and probably end up taking it to my local panel beater.
