  • How to Jack up Main Gear for Wheel Service

Fellow Taylorcrafters, How do you folks or what method do you use to jack up your
    main gear for wheel service??

are you jacking from the wheel axil area?? or lifting entire airplane with the prop via
    cherry picker??

I use a screw jack from an older Ford Taurus under the axle area, actually my wheelpant mount. The jack surface is small and fits right under. Link: http://vb.taylorcraft.org/showthread...ght=wheel+jack

Do not lift by the prop. You lift by the engine mount back toward where it mounts to the firewall it that is your choice.

This topic has been covered before, I think pictures too. Use the search box in the upper right for more options.

I push up on the wing strut and hold the airplane up until the wife puts the jackstand under the gear

Re: How to Jack up Main Gear for Wheel Service

I often work alone so have a Hi-Lift or Handyman jack (http://www.hi-lift.com) that has a 2x4 attached to the jack at two spots, the tongue and upper end of the lift...raising or lowering the jack extends or retracts the attached 2x2. The jack base sits on an attached 12x12" piece of heavy plywood for stability. The upper end of the 2x4 is cut concave, wrapped with a hose clamp to prevent fracture, and padded with rubber where it contacts any metal.

My front wing struts typically have had Piper-style tiedown rings attached to the upper end. To raise a gear for wheel or ski maintenance I raise the 2x4 until it contacts the strut below the tiedown, then raise the gear.

That setup can also be used to lift the upper strut attach points by placing the angled jack's 2x4 against the flat wing attach bracket. The strut can then be removed and adjusted for length by one person. I chock the wheels when doing that operation.

It's been around since 1974 and serviced 9 planes without a problem.

I use a scissor jack on a plywood base...vertical unistrut tubes(one inside the other to allow length adjustments)...outside piece is welded to top of jack. On snow or icy conditions, I drive two spikes through the wooden base into the ground. Before lifting the wing, the padded top of the vertical piece is secured to the upper end of the lift strut.
