I swear by Phillips X/C 20W-50. Used to use Shell, but changed a number of years ago and will never go back.

Re: Type of engine oil using

Robbie, I've been using Phillips X/C 20-50 year round for a while now also. I just found it easier to fly whenever we got an earlier cold snap. Before that I used W100 in warm weather, and changed to Aeroshell 15-50 in winter. Getting a pair of skis made me decide I wanted to simplify the change over to cold weather flying as much as possible, and I didn't then have to think about the oil, just keep it changed as needed.

On this last trip we took in September, I did decide to use Aeroshell 100W, just because I figured that would be easier to get at FBOs "on the road" to add a quart when needed, as well as for oil changes. Between the flight out to the Pacific NW and back to the Midwest, then down to the Fort Worth area to ferry the Chief with Rob and then bring him back, I put 82.5 hours on the Tcraft. The oil consumption was the same with the 100W in 50 - 90° temps as I would see with the 20-50, about 1 qt. in 12-15 hours.

Exxon Elite 20W-50 but I am also a fan of Phillips XC 20W-50 as stated above.

Oh, and Robbie, if you are leaving it for extended periods you should follow the Continental instructions for storage for that engine. Definitely a PITA to do but engines aren't cheap or easily obtained.
            Cheers,

Re: Type of engine oil using

I used to deliver 55 gallon barrels of shell 100 to the DC3's that were flying tourists in the 1990's in anchorage, we ran out, so they took the Phillps, they were using 1 barrel for a change and 1 barrel in between oil changes with the Shell, they went to half of that consumption with the Phillips. Sold me on it. Tim
