  • C85-12 Engine mount

    all
i am trying very hard to order the STC from Terry Bowden, he has been very busy.

The engine is going into test cell Monday and have a question
Does Terry's STC allow the reuse of the existing motor mount or will it require a different motor mount (i see wag aero has a T-craft motor mount listed for use with a c85). any help would be appreciated
    thanks
    Paul

    Re: C85-12 Engine mount

    Paul,

The C85 will mount in the stock original motor mount. I just installed a C85-12 with B&C starter. It is tight to the firewall but it does fit. That little recess in the firewall comes into use with the -12 installation to allow clearance for the plug wires from the slick mags.

    PS

    I am utilizing Terry's STC.

Looks like a very nice installation. How much did Airforms gig you for that Baffling?

Baffling can be worth its weight in gold if you have cooling problems. Tim

thanks for the info, i will get it media cleaned, inspected, painted and put back on.
          Your installation looks really clean.
Which air intake are you using? i need to get one and would like to use a filter also.

          Thanks Again

I'd used a bracket filter. I'd also change to a Luscombe exhaust while I was at it. Much better.

              Paul,

The carb heat box is the stock unit that was on the airplane when I purchased it several years ago. It had a Bracket filter originally. I just switched to the Donaldson P10-7150 filter. I have not operated with it yet but many reviews and input on this forum were very positive. My experience so far with installation/fit has been extremely positive. I will try to provide feedback after I have some operational experience with the Donaldson filter.

The Airforms baffles are extremely nice! Very complete kit to include the inter-cylinder baffles. The cost for the powder coated with color coded material was $1140. The fit is extremely nice. I do not know if the stock Taylorcraft baffling would fit with the C85 inside of the cowling? I did not try to fit my old baffling. The Luscombe exhaust was already installed on my airplane with the A-75 I had prior to the conversion to the C85. It fit as well or better to the 85 than the 75.

If all goes according to plan, I will be able to perform initial engine runs and flights in a couple of weeks.

                Re: C85-12 Engine mount

I'm consistently seeing a max drop in manifold pressure at WFO takeoff versus pre-start between 1" to 1.5" with the Donaldson element. It's a new MP gauge that accurately tracks my altimeter when that gauge is set to "0" elevation = local uncorrected air pressure.

If accurate across it's range that's exemplary intake tract performance close to no filter in place and the highest MP I've seen in many engines compared with the Brackett elements that typically indicate a drop of 2" or more, especially when wet. My MP probe is in the induction spider and not on one particular cylinder.

I've visited Airforms facility, bought my struts from Lee, and they produce first class engine baffles. Expensive, but as Tim notes, well worth the eventual protection for the engine.

I have the luscombe 8e exhaust and the spin on filter also. I regret that i didnt get my airforms baffling painted, they are raw aluminum
just finishing last few things on engine and will take to the test cell monday.
on the heat muffs are those from univair? if so i got 3 additional pieces of aluminum that look to need field trimming and install but not any directions. does anyone know of a visual of them installed??

                  Thanks

The directions for the muffs are supposed to be in the STC paperwork from Doug Combs. Tim
