Removing paint/primer from engine mount?

My A&P gave me a homework assignment. He gave me my engine mount and a sanding disk that chucks in the drill, and a variety of 3M/ScotchGuard pads and told me to remove the paint and primer. He warned my not to use anything that would scratch the metal (we had a similar discussion about a year ago on the forum). Although I'm having a grand time, my arm is getting tired. Is there a solvent I can use to remove the paint and primer? - Mike

Methyline chloride gets rid of most paint (commercial paint stripper). Or MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) gets rid of most non-epoxies.

When finished, paint it white (shows future cracks, damage etc)

Go to Wal-Mart,they have a paint stripper in a blue and white can call "Dad's paint stripper".It is the best stuff I have ever used.Just make sure you use rubber gloves because it will strip skin too.Also don't let it dry on the metal.If some of it does dry just use a little more stripper and rinse with water.Water will neutralize it.
PS.Some of your local hardware stores should have it too.

What did you do to tick him off!!
I agree that stripper is the way to go and then check for cracks etc. with a dye penetrent inspection. Have him advise you on primer & paint. I use a self etching primer....

Good morning Forrest - Naw, didn't tick him off - It's a start-up operation and they are very busy and undercapatalized, so my project is in the corner. Up until now, it was specialized work i.e. o/h the engine, rewelding a fixture - but now I can do some of the drudge work for him and maybe hurry things along. I"m having fun. Lots of good suggestions for removing paint. Think I'll do it in the open air, where it is currently 14 degrees! - MIke

Hm now I am in trouble agin I was thinking!
I know it is not aircraft paint but if I have to remove the paint evry year for the annual inspection I would use Tremclad.
It washes off with an alcohol.( Just don't waste the Southern Comfort on it. )
Would make for easy inspection and repainting.

All - Will 'Dad's" work better than MEK? I used MEK and it removed the paint, but didn't seem to touch the primer - Mike

Dad's paint stripper will almost strip chrome from a car bumper....it's good stuff!
