  • 2015 ANR Headsets - experience

I had been flying a Telex Stratus passive headset for about 18 years, top of the line at the time. I had an old DC for pax. It was well past time to get a new set this year. The Aviation Consumer tests of the new ones this year are all pretty good reviews. I flew the latest Zulu 2 for a while in the Tcraft, but not the new PFX Light Speeds and tried the new Bose, LS-PFX and AKG V100’s at Oshkosh this year.

I bought a pair of AKG’s and will give them my highest recommendation, they are excellent! Overall comfort and better fit around ears than others, audio is as Av Consumer reports, better than the others. And I think better ANR than the LightSpeeds and very good battery life with auto shut off. The AKG techs say they have an analog only ANR vs. the digital conversion the Bose and LS have. It seems smoother and bit faster.

In a noisy Tcraft cabin they are incredibly quiet vs. the Telex and better than the Zulu 2’s and work well with a Sigtronics intercom. They are unaffected when you pop open the side window in cruise. They all cost about the same (painful) but what’s your hearing worth? Great comfort and very pleasing intercom use which makes for better flying. The OSK show deal was $200 off for two plus a nice JBL speaker.

Bluetooth and phone connectivity is great and the map light feature is useful. Also comes with both power cord styles which the others don’t have, really nice when in different airplanes. A pair weights about the same as the Telex. The mic cover is an actual cap that can be snapped off and cleaned. I also agree with Av Consumer you do have to get the proper thickness on the head band pad. So far very durable, you can twist them around in a fashion I would hesitate to do with Bose or LS with very small/light headset cases. My wife is also very happy, the upgrade over the David Clark is like being in a different galaxy. Clamping force vs. all of them is lower because of the better over ear fit.

I pulled the trigger at OSH last year for a set of Sennheiser S1's. If you bought them at the show, went to the Sennheiser booth and show them your receipt you would get a crisp $100 bill from them. The North American President of Sennheiser took care of me, all the people at the booth were great. And, oh....fantastic headset. (Should be for the money, lol).

Many years ago I bought a pair of Light Speed ANR headsets to use in my Taylorcraft. After several years they started having a buzzing sound in them. Then no one could hear me on the radio, and it wasn't the radio. I took them across town to their headquarters and was told that both pairs needed parts that they didn't support anymore. I was pissed because these headsets weren't very old in my opinion. They had been superseded by a newer model so the company didn't want to repair them. I swore right then and there I would never own another Light Speed product. I had been using a Telex 5X5 Pro headset at work for a couple of decades and accidentally closed the boom mic in a cockpit window of a Boeing one day. I sent it to Telex and they fixed the mic for $75 and did a tune up on the electronics portion. That headset was over twenty years old and they still repaired it. The Light Speeds were maybe five or six years old. Because of this, I called Telex and asked them how long they would service a pair of ANR headsets if I bought their model. They told me as long as they were still in business, so that is what I bought. I am very happy with them. I am sure they are not on the same level as a pair of thousand dollar Senheisers or Bose, but I didn't even pay half of that for them. They are comfortable and cancel out the noise of the Taylorcraft cockpit.

I purchases Softcomms about 7 years ago and like them. I think I bought the top of the line or the next one down.

I've had problems with the Lightspeed ones having premature deterioration of the ear cups. They leave black crud all over your face. I went back to David Clark passive headphones and I'm happy with those. I just sent both of my sets in for rebuild and am happy with the results. One of them had about 6000 hours on em and the other about 2000. (but both were chronologically old)

I just bought a pair of Lightspeed Sierras a couple weeks ago, returned one pair and finally got the second pair to work sporadically. I got a DRE-205 at the same time so I called them up today. It turns out for some reason Lightspeed uses a smaller Mic jack (Chinese) than all other companies. The ear jack is the same as industry standard to I can hear fine, just problematic mic. I'm not sure what I'm going to due yet.

A couple of years ago I converted a set of passive David Clark H10-13.2 headsets with an ANR kit. Not the caliber of the new factory ANR's probably, but for me it was worth the money.
