  • McCauley Prop for 85hp Taylorcraft wanted

I am looking for a good McCauley prop for my plane as mine is no longer usable. I have found one without paperwork for 1500.00 just not sure that is a good deal since I have no history on the prop. Anyone here have a good one for sale.

I dropped $2700 for a McCauley prop without paperwork, if it measures good, I would buy it for that price. Tim

      Bill,

Have you checked with any prop shops to see what they would charge you to examine the prop to confirm it was good? It might be worth a few hundred extra just to know that what you are getting is usable and safe.

Brian at precision in Boise would charge 250 to measure and inspect and certify. Tim

We have a McCauley shop here in Wichita as part of the Yingling group I know they have told me that it is about 700 to recondition a prop. Don't know about just checking it and the prop is in California so shipping it both ways if it were bad might be a problem as well. I had a 70X48 on the plane before, what is the really recommended prop for the 85 hp Taylorecraft from you guys that actually fly the plane?

When I was looking for props for my C85, I tried to compile some of the scattered information that I had gleaned from various threads on this forum.
Plus I added some other info from external sources.
The one outlier in this data (69" diameter) is not legal and should not be considered.

That is why I would run an O-200, more prop options and it costs less to overhaul than an 85 when its all said and done because of parts availability. Tim

Found a 71 X 48 in great shape... however it has been polished and from threads here sounds like that is a deal breaker. Can it be checked by McCauley and repainted and made ok?

A prop shop should be able to check the prop and repaint it, call around and get a price on having it checked and repainted.

Yes, Bernard is correct, any prop shop can make it legal if it Dimension checks good. Tim

Called Yingling which is the McCauley prop shop here in wichita.... 765.00 to do a complete job on the prop...550.00 to just balance it and put new coating on it and then paint it... but I would have a 0 hours since overhaul and the paperwork that would come with it. So a little under 2000.00 for a papered Prop. Seems like a lot for the rework but I guess since it is done by McCauley that is what they get.
