Do I just open the links, or does it email me all correspondenses like topica did?

John, This bulletin board will not send you messages...you have to seek them out.

The best way is at the home page, to click on the "view new posts" link (which is under the "welcome back, John Reinert")

This will show all posts since you last logged on.
