  • Cracked rim shinn style

Found some cracks in my shinn style rims, looks like after the years the fatigue is settling in, I have an extra set but they are a little different but use the same model no. -6c made by Firestone, looks like I will need different bearings, what do all you guys know about this.

    Thanks eddie

    Send pictures of the cracks.

I suspect that you are seeing the fold line from the manufacturing process.

Different bearings sounds suspicious. How are they different?

I saw the plane being worked on. Did you get it fixed?

The shin wheel was used on multiple different axle sizes, you need the right ones...3/4" outer, 1 1/4" inner axles are what you have. I have had wheel halves that were 1 1/4" outers and 1 1/2" axles. Tim

I don't have them home to take picture, but it looks like one of the bolts might've been tightened to tight and caving it in. Not sure, but it definitely is a crack,
Different bearings.... I meant the axel I have is like JP2 says, 1-1/4 at base to 3/4 at end and the extra rims I have, have a hole for the axel on the outside of 2-1/4, I believe it's for straight axel
Pa1195, nope still grounded, anything you can tell me about taylorcrafts let me know, still a student pilot, I landed in under 200 ft the other day so I'm improving

The wheels for a straight axle work on pre war Aeroncas as I recall and I think are easy to sell. Not for a B/F model Taylorcraft as Tim said.

The fold line near the outer rim can look like a crack was thinking you may have been seeing that. Sorry that it wasn't.

There is a Shinn wheel on Ebay but it looks very badly corroded.

Hi Eddie. There's helpful folks here that know way more than I about Taylorcraft. I'm just returning to owning one after 40 years. I had a great flying bird (N29694) when I lived in the Delta Jct/Tok area during the pipeline era. Kept it on Clearwater Lake on floats, and next to the same river on a farmer's field on wheels and skis. Had lots of fun with it as you will too when you get the parts straightened out.

I'm at the airport daily and saw it in the back of Arctic Aviation's hangar. It'll fly again for sure with their help. Mine should be up here from Anchorage by the end of the month (underwent engine overhaul and other parts changeout).
