  • Nose tank installation

    Hi Folks.
I am reassembling a BC12D which I received as a pile of parts. I have finally figured out the nose tank, BUT, can't quite get how the rods, rubber tubes and metal sleeves work. Should the rubbers be slid into the tank on the rods and the sleeves then slid in to expand and secure them or am I missing something completely? Thanks for any advice. Larry

    Hi Larry,

Long time no hear. Hope you are well.

Rubber hoses (4) go on the tank holes. You may find them easier to work with if you put them in after positioning the tank.

As I remember it the metal sleeves go in between the rubber hoses and the rods as you suggested.

My set up used two plain nuts on each rod end, one is used for a jam nut. Its faster/easier than running a stop nut down that long thread.

After you get it together tighten the nuts enough to assure that the rods will absorb some load as soon as a force is applied to that tank area. What I am trying to say is tighten enough so that the rod nuts make good solid contact with the airframe so that load is shared but do not tighten so much that you deform or damage. The rods are tension load carrying member.

I recall putting some oversize washers under the nut too so that the washer had good contact on the welded in support tube.

      Hi Dave,
Thank you for your help. All is well here. The Aeronca finally flew out of here about 2 weeks ago. This Tcraft is another pile of parts. Folks seem to love to tear em down, then get discouraged. Been down this road about 4 times now. Be nice to do it twice on the same model airplane. ;o) Hope you and yours have a happy ,healthy New Year! Larry

I find the hardest part is finding a hose with the correct ID/OD to fit the tank and rods. Tim

Some of the hoses that I have seen had a wrapping of friction tape on the o.d. I suspect that was to get a good fit.

I believe that at one time I cut sections of an air hose that fit well.

              Hi Dave,
I have 2 Vag projects. The certified one has all the fabric on and painted. Just need to figure out what engine and assemble it. Now if I could start saying "NO" to new jobs I could get it flying. Should be caught up on everything I HAVE to do by June, I hope.
Finished all the welding on the exp. fuselage. Going to build wings w/ parts from Carlson's for that one and mount a C90.
How about bringing your Vagabond to Sentimental Journey in June? Larry

                Larry,
Sold it last year and bought a Fleet Canuck. Just got the Canuck
Certified and flying, I will be at Sentimental Journey with it.
