  • Rudder Pedals

My feet are not excessively big, size 12 but it is easy to get the right foot partialy on the right seat left pedal which can cause some interesting results. Have thought about welding a tab on the side of the pedal to keep my foot from sliding over but how much of a job is it to get them out to work on. Surely I am not the only one to have that problem so how did some of you fix that problem.

    Re: Rudder Pedals

Aside from teh legal problems with modifying the control system (there will be someone to chime in on that soon) I would NOT weld on the pedal. Why not something that clamps on? It could be made on another set of pedals (I have a couple of extra sets) and then just bolted on to yours.

I would think the modification might be made as a one time approval with a good IA. It is a safety thing and should be able to be designed to not interfere with anyone else using the plane.

I am not Shirley but I recall that mine has a bolt thru the right hand side set of pedals so that they can be removed.

Would you be happy with just removing them or are the right hand side controls being used?

If yours don't have the screw maybe you can find a replacement set that does.

The rudder pedals on my '46 BC12D do have tabs on the ends. I think that they are original.

They should have tabs just like Tim's, mine does.

That is what all of the rudder pedal sets I have are like too. I assumed he is talking about larger tabs to prevent wide feet from hitting the passenger side pedals.

              Re: Rudder Pedals

I found a picture which shows a picture of the pedals and there are tabs on the ends but the offending one appears like the end tab is bent down. I will have to get to the airport and take a closer look tomorrow.

                Re: Rudder Pedals

Well it warmed up in the lower 20's today so I wasnt shaking too hard to get the key in the hanger door lock. On the left side the tabs on the outside of both rudders were both bent down straight, the left tab on the left pedal and the right tab on the right pedal. The right seat pedals were still ok so my feet will fit on them with the tabs bent up. My instructor made me fly from the right seat the first 3 or 4 hours so he had brakes if needed. Anyway I used vise grips to bend them back and they are pretty light gauge material but didnt bend too easily. The picture I posted was taken before I bought the plane so it wasnt anything I did but I am not sure how they would get bent. Now just need some decent weather and try it out.

                  Re: Rudder Pedals

I have the same problem. So during my pre-landing ritual I kick enough rudder back and forth to ensure clearance.
