As you look down on the rotor it rotates clockwise on an A-65. Cylinder 1 (RH side aft) is on the lower left, the upper left contact is cylinder 3 (front right), cylinder 4 (aft left) is next and the lower right wire is cylinder 4 (front left).
Not sure which "mark" you are talking about. Where are you in the manual and I will look it up. I think I am not understanding the question.
There is a dot on the pinion gear, and two symbols on the distributor gear. one is line with the top half of a circle, and the other has the bottom half. One is for clockwise rotating and the other anti-clockwise. Just wanted to verify that its assembled correctly.
If that doesnt help, I think I have a spare at the house I can take a picture of.
Thanks Hank,
There is a small "Drill dot" on the pinion in line with the gear tooth and two marks on the rotor gear in line with the tooth spaces, with two spaces between them. The marks are to insure the points open at the right time (while the rotor is pointed at the right distributor contact).
The pinion "dot" should be aligned with the LATER mark if the mag rotor is rotating CLOCKWISE. In other words, if you align the dot with the rotor gear mark so the pinion mark is at 12:00 and the rotor mark is at 6:00 the "extra" mark will be at 5:30.
This is for a CONTINENTAL A-65. If the rotor is spun the other direction you use the other mark, but that also screws up the impulse coupling that needs to snap as the rotor goes past the distributor contact. Remember the input gear turns the OPPOSITE direction from the rotor! If you turn the input gear backwards the impulse will NOT snap. If you turn it the right direction you will feel the spring wind up and you better not have your finger near the ignition lead. When it snaps you can get a bad shock and will probably drop the mag!
Hank
You don't want to know how I know that. I didn't drop the mag, but I think it has finger dents in the case now. ;-)
