Just found out that the aileron hinge bracket on my newly covered wing will not line up with the center bracket on my aileron, I replaced the magnesium style brackets with older steel brackets ,for strength and safety, now must I uncover the aileron to move the bracket? to get everthing to line up.

Re: Aileron brackets
It is only on the passenger side wing, that is the only wing recovered and have changed out the aileron brackets on, the brackets were bolted on the original holes of the rear spar where the old brackets bolted on the spar, the rear spar has not been changed. One option I have is , working thru the inspection cover to replace the middle aileron bracket with the magnesium bracket but that would be a last resort.

Re: Aileron brackets
Unfortunately this is one of those very hard lessons that most of us learn the hard way when doing fabric work on airplanes.....always test fit before covering. I don't think you have a quick easy fix on this one....something is gonna have to be uncovered at least partially.Kevin Mays

Re: Aileron brackets
I took a couple pre-war wings apart awhile back, and the one wing had the large area washers under the bracket against the spar as a shim to keep it lined up with the aileron. it was the part of the bracket that had the two bolts. The other wing was the opposite, the part of the bracket that has one bolt had two washers under it . This was done for side to side alignment. Who knows when this was done, but had been like that for years. Both of these brackets were the center ones with the three bolts.

Re: Aileron brackets
Quoting the famous US Marine from the 1960's TV sitcom Gomer Pyle, Private First Class US Marine," Surprise Surprise Surprise". I was able to remove the steel aileron bracket thur the back of the wing in the aileron hole and accessing thru the inspection covers which I cut thru the new fabric remove it without damage to any thing, now the original magnesium cast bracket will go back on and the aileron will fit.Last edited by waltermrich; 10-31-2014, 10:23.
