I'm thinking about upgrading from 8.50's to 29 or 26 inch airstreaks. I know some people don't care for Shinn brakes even on smaller tires, but I haven't had trouble tuning them to the point that they could easily nose the plane over. I don't want to deal with the hassle or weight that comes with a hydraulic wheel/brake upgrade. I know there are some people that have run these bigger tires on Shinn wheels, even if it's not approved. What is your opinion? Is a Shinn/29'' combo remotely realistic? Also, any numbers out there for ground to axle height for 26's or 29's?

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
I would run the Desser 8.50's once they start selling the certified ones, they are supposed to be only $200 each plus the tube. You don't have enough brake for the Bushwheels or airstreaks, I have single pucks on 850s and they are just right, enough to hold up the tail but not enough to put her on her back...TimN29787

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
I really need the larger tire size for increased AOA and tundra/large rocks so another 8.50 just wont do. I haven't seen any 29's around lately but I took some measurements on my buddy's old 30'' tires on his pacer. The ground to axle distance is 12.5 inches and on my Tcraft it's 8.5''12. I'm assuming the 29's are pretty much the same diameter as the old 30's which would mean the new required breaking force is just under 1.5 times what I have to apply now. Given how much force I have to exert now I don't think another 50% would really be that bad but first hand advice would be great.

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
Have Steve at Atlee build taller gear? Install vortex generators? if you are trying to get in that short, get a cub with flaps, tall gear, and a 180 lyc. You have a small t-craft with crappy mechanical brakes..just use it as it was intended....unless you want to do all of the alsworth mods, but that will be hard to do with the current FAA administration.N29787

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
I've got VG's and stripped the plane down. Getting out of a short strip is a lot more of an issue than getting in, but that's not to say I don't mind having ineffective breaks. If it came down to it I would just install hydraulic brakes rather than modified gear or buying an expensive cub.

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
It's not all about any one aspect of bigger tires here. The combined advantages of less stress on the airframe, shorter takeoff roll, and opening rougher landing sites make me like the idea of getting bushwheels. If I can find some used ones for a decent price I would like to pick them up, just trying to be cautious about creating real problems with the brakes if I do so.

Mike, try opening this link to some older tundra tires...24 inchers...in Kenai. http://alaskaslist.com/1/posts/10_Tr...ith_Tubes.html
The price being fairly modest might let you try bigger tires without breaking the bank. DickDick Smith N5207M TF#159

Re: Bushwheels and Shinn Brakes
Just for information my bl/bc 85 with 26/12.50/6 airstreak and a AKBush 3200 tail wheel and a stock tail spring has the same angle of attack as hanks bc/65 only I sit higher then his this was measured on the horizontal stab with a angle degree tool . both planes were at 10 DEG angle. Now you need more brakes for the bigger tires the shinn wont do what you want.1940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000
